Scoop on the Colbert report from someone at the taping.....no endorsement - post here

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/4/17/214441/801/331/498009

Hey I'm a new user, and I don't have diary privileges yet, so I'm posting this as a comment in a few places in the hopes that someone will pick it up and post it as a diary themselves. Please copy and paste into a diary yourself with credit if you want folks to read this:

Hillary, Edward, Obama on Colbert Report TONIGHT!

I just got home from the taping of tonight’s episode of the Colbert Report in Philadelphia. Get ready for this: Hillary Clinton, John Edwards, and Barack Obama ALL made appearances! (The first two in person, and the third by satellite.) We all knew Hillary would be there, but John and Barack were COMPLETE surprises to everyone in the audience. Here are some rough notes on my experience tonight. (Warning: a few joke spoilers ahead.)

The writers of the show were on fire tonight, taking ABC News to task for the ridiculous debate, and skewering George Stephanopoulos. And the special interview guest was Patrick Murphy, the only member of congress to serve in the Iraq War.

The warm-up comedian before the show specifically warned the audience against and negativity towards Hillary. He said that if anyone was even thinking of boo-ing her, they should go home right now. There was some distinct grumbling over this. The mostly college-age crowd was hugely in favor of Obama. While we were waiting to be let in, there were spontaneous chants in the lobby of Yes We Can Yes We Can!

Hillary came out and delivered a very brief tongue-in-cheek exchange with the producers to solve a fake technical glitch with the giant screen. The whole premise was that she was a problem solver, and she went through a tech support series of questions about what kind fo router they were using, which wires were connected, etc.

Later in the show, after a little setup bit about how the white male vote is finally getting the attention it has long deserved, John Edwards suddenly came out of nowhere and delivered the "Ed-Words" for the night, joking about how much both candidates wanted his endorsement. Main theme: all they really need to do is promise him a jet ski.

While folks did cheer when Hillary came on stage, they erupted when John suddenly appeared. He was interrupted by applause throughout the entire skit. I hope this indicates the end of his long media absence for him. People in the room seemed hungry for some John. I got a little misty-eyed at the prospect of him on the campaign trail for Obama. Think of the good he could do to help heal the divisive wounds that the recent weeks have inflicted upon the Democratic shot at the White House!

Obama had the last word, appearing via satellite (on the big screen Hillary helped troubleshoot!), and officially "put distractions on notice", a reference to the poor excuse for a debate last night. (The notice board apparently being a Colbert Report running theme. I don’t watch the show enough to know that.)

It felt like a truly historic occasion to be present for the taping of this show. We had to wait in line for four hours just to be let into the theater, due to extremely tight security, secret service checks, etc.

I suppose this will all be old news in a few hours, and I’m sure will be top videos on youtube, but I decided to write this to get the word out about it now, so Kos folks can spread the word and be sure to tune in for a great show.

3. The audience had to be warned not to be rude to the woman candidate.
What a fine generation of young people we have. What great achievements we can look forward to from them.

14. Manners is "kid gloves"? What interesting standards.
Didn't Sixty Minutes say today's young people have to be taught table manners, too?

Clearly educational standards of basic behavior have slipped.

33. Probably because of some of the dumb sexist comments like this one:
"Iron my shirt!"

7. Do you think Mother Teresa would have gotten the same reaction?
You don't want to see it, but a lot of people dislike Hillary because she's Hillary, not because she's a woman. And, in my opinion, she's done a lot in this campaign to earn it.

12. Mother Teresa knew her place.
Though she had lost her faith, she continued to shill for the Church. And you're right, total hypocrite that she was, the audience would have been breathless in reverence and awe.

But please don't try to sell me on the mantra "people dislike Hillary because she's Hillary." People LIKE YOU dislike Hillary because she doesn't know her place and had the brass flaming manly balls (look at our imagery of courage) to attempt to be something else and something more.

The same reason you all suddenly despise Bill. HOW DARE HE PLAY THE SUPPORTIVE WIFE!

I'm not fooled by what you use to fool yourself.

And if Mother Teresa had run for president, you bet your life they would have been rude.

16. You don't know what I think
I actually admire the progress she's made in her career. I do not believe women belong in the kitchen. I do not believe they are, or should be subservient to men.
I dislike the way she's run her campaign. The negativity and wedge-issue attacks are beneath her. And I do not despise Bill. I think he was the best president in the past 20 years. I didn't always agree with his policies, but I never agree completely....well, I might agree completely with Kucinich. So, since you don't know me, and you obviously don't read minds, could you kindly STFU?

18. Oh for Christ's sake.
I swear, if Hillary went on TV juggling babies while farting the national anthem, and anyone complained, you tunnel-vision feminists would accuse them of sexism. SHE'S AN OBNOXIOUS, CORPORATIST, PAIN IN THE ASS! It has nothing to do with her being a woman! Open your freaking eyes and ears!

As for your ridiculous comments about young people, all you are doing is revealing how completely out of touch you are. Why don't you get out of your room and go meet some "younguns." You might find out they are pretty darn terrific!

25. "Tunnel-vision feminists." "Corporatist" "Nothing to do with being a woman"
Do you have one original thought or did you get them all from those you are so eager to please?

I will be impressed when you notice that ANY woman running for the presidency would be called exactly the same names and treated exactly the same way. I have no respect for women who shout that it is ONLY Hillary who is being disrespected. And only because she's Hillary...a loving, hardworking woman who raised a well-mannered, well-educated, respectable child.

I am so ashamed of you.

20. So, what you're saying is,
It's okay for college-age kids to boo her? If my son would do such a thing, I would be so ashamed of him. However, he's been raised to respect others. How do your grandchildren behave, Liberal Gramma?

21. No, that's not what I'm saying
I'm saying that IF she's booed (and I agree it's rude but parents don't have much control over college-aged kids' behavior) it's not because she's a woman. I think some posters are all too quick to assign sexism to any anti-Hillary behavior. I also think some posters are all too quick to assign racism to any anti-Obama behavior. I also think that sexism AND racism play a part in this race, though I am saddened to think it.

As for how my grandchildren behave, not that it's pertinent to the discussion, I doubt if their parents would allow them to boo anyone, but they are still young enough to be under parental control.

28. I certainly am old enough to recognize sexism
When the Equal Pay Act of 1963 was made into law, my boss told me the female employees would not be getting raises to bring them up to the male wage scale, because the company planned to rename the positions the males held so they could pay them a higher wage. When I had my first child, my health insurance paid $100 for maternity expenses for an employee and $200 for an employee's spouse. My employer laid me off at 4 months into my pregnancy--company policy. I was passed up for promotion because I had a young family. I have had to train young men to be my boss. Yes, I recognize discrimination. BUT not all of the voters who prefer Obama (or McCain, for that matter) are sexist. Some of us don't like Clinton for her policies, some don't like her for her campaign style, some just want a change. There are certainly some who don't want her because she's a woman, but not ALL who oppose her are sexist. That is my point.

29. So it's better that Hillary live in a bubble?
Thinking that everyone loves her?

Sometimes booing has its place, maybe not the Colbert report, but booing, and yes indeed rudeness has it's place at times. The alternative is a "civility" that borders on timidity.

I'm sick and tired of self-expression being hobbled by some overly reverent idea of what is appropriate behavior towards politicians.

26. Voting reform folks and stolen election activists
Will never ever forgive her for letting Carville whisper to Kerry that Kerry did not have the ballots needed in Ohio. carvile let him think that there were only 150 to 160 K ballots outstanding. We now know there may have been as many as 400 K. Enough to have beaten Bush's margin of 138 K.

then on the day after th election, Hillary phoned Edwards and scolded him for insisting on demanding that all Ohio ballots be counted. She called it grandstanding.

it would shock and disappoint me if members of my generation were so uncivil as to boo their leaders. That simply would not do. :sarcasm:

27. Just because she's a woman doesn't mean she doesn't have to be accountable for her campaign.
If she runs her campaign like she's got Karl Rove on speed dial, there are plenty of people who will boo her, and her gender doesn't have a DAMN thing to do with it.

Just wait a day or two, and a clip should be up on Colbert's website. That's what the "Daily Show" does.
