An Acton man who had been sunbathing in the nude was charged with assault and attempted murder after a group of teens stumbled upon him during a fishing expedition in Littleton.

The police description is that three teens going fishing came upon him at a pond, threw a stone in the water to announce their presence to him, at which he snatched a metal bar and fell upon them in high, and apparently naked, dudgeon.

An Acton man was arrested and charged with attempted murder and assault and other charges yesterday for allegedly attacking teenagers that discovered the man sunbathing in the nude at Nagog Pond.

The man, William Tibolt, 52, of 29 Mohawk Drive, denied to Littleton police that he was nude, saying he had a pair of shorts on.

But the three teens went to the spot where Tibolt lay, and wanted to fish without him there. According to the teens, who were not identified because they are under 17 years old, they tossed a stone in the water to try and uproot Tibolt.

Tibolt told police they threw the stone at him.

Following that, Tibolt allegedly went back to his car and retrieved a metal baton which he used to strike two of the boys, causing serious injuries. He pushed the third boy in the reservoir, according to police.

After the attack, Littleton police say the boys went to a nearby house and called the department.

"We investigated it as an assault and battery," said police Sgt. Robert Romilly. He was charged with attempted murder, assault and battery, and three counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.

Tibolt was arraigned in Ayer District Court on Thursday where bail was set at $1,000 cash.

Umm - just guessing here, but I think probably the kids threw rocks at the guy and he got pissed off and chased them with some sort of metal pole he fetched from his car. Attempted murder and assault seems to be a bit over the top.
