Iraq executions follow apparently unfair trials

18 April 2008

Twenty-eight people have been executed in Iraq this week following what appear to have been hasty and unfair trials. Those executed were arrested in clashes that took place in the past three weeks.

Amnesty International has said that, for them to be arrested, sentenced and executed within such a short period raises serious concerns about the trial process. The organization has called on the Iraqi authorities to disclose all relevant information about these trials, including whether those executed had access to legal representation or not.

"The circumstances of these executions make it urgent for the Iraqi authorities to establish a moratorium on the death penalty," Amnesty International said today.

Amnesty International has repeatedly expressed its concerns about the trials conducted by criminal courts in Iraq, and whose procedures fall short of international standards for fair trials.

1. The Police Are, Sir, In This Instance, Merely Death Squads In Official Trappings
That there was any delay at all seems remarkable....

The recent fighting was simply civil war between Shia factions, and went pretty badly for the one we are backing, and pretty well for the one the Iranians have lined up behind.

U.S.-backed Iraqi troops battle Shiite militiamen in Basra and Sadr City

Issue date: 4/17/08 Section: World

BAGHDAD - Clashes with Shiite militiamen flared in two cities yesterday as a U.S. drone fired two missiles in Basra and U.S.-backed Iraqi troops battled in Baghdad's sprawling Sadr City slum.

The airstrike in Basra - which the military said killed four militants - came after militiamen attacked an Iraqi army patrol with rocket-propelled grenades in the Hayaniyah district, the U.S. military said. A vehicle suspected of containing more weapons and ammunition also was destroyed.

The district has seen some of the fiercest fighting since the Basra offensive began three weeks ago to dislodge militia fighters including anti-U.S. cleric Muqtada al-Sadr's Mahdi Army.

Yesterday, the Iraqi government said it was replacing two senior military commanders overseeing operations in Basra, Iraq's second-largest city.

Sounds more like the parisians are fighting against the occupying army's collaborators. Heck even a lot of French collaborated with the Nazis. The French collaborators had their "own" government and everything. We still liberated them.

Great to see you around here, Sir.

7. We Back One Side, Sir, That Is All
The fight would go on in our absence, and probably have no different outcome: the Sadr-ist faction will win. He now has the backing of Ay. al'Sistani for his militia, according at least to recent reports.
