the madness.....
In recent days we have witnesses on television several videos posted by teenager showing brutal fight scenes against their classmates and so called friends. While for the teens this activity seem just normal behavior and the filming of the event gives them their so called 15 minutes of fame we all have seen where local law enforcement has stepped in and charged these kids with criminal misconduct to some degree for which I applaud them for.
An element that has been left out of the equation is the websites responsibility where these videos where posted. I believe that they should be charged with being accessories to the crime. While we are guaranteed free speech and expression under our constitution we are not guaranteed freedom from breaking the law. I believe that the more these types of videos are allowed to be out there the more teens are encouraged to escalate these types of activity's.This has to be stopped at the website ability to publish these videos as well.
I am writing my state and federal elected officials asking for them to introduce legislation addressing this matter...this must stop...would you consider joining me and write your's????
We must stop the madness somehow, this is just one way.

1. They can't preemptively delete a video. |
|
YouTube and similar sites are user-monitored, so these users can flag any video they deem offensive or inappropriate, and YouTube can then delete the video.
And it's silly to blame YouTube for these dumbass kids' actions. Something is clearly wrong with these kids and/or their parents that they would actually post fights on the internet.

2. They should be mandated to..... |
|
there are several photo/video sites on the internet that pre-screen content before allowing it on. This is accomplished by involving the community of users to act as SCREENERS/MODERATORS while it may take several days for your contribution to appear it assures high quality content. Also the screeners do this on their own time and without compensation.
It's called responsibility

Especially as a DUer, you know how satisfying it is to see a campaign speech, etc., to be posted to YouTube within minutes for everyone to see.
We shouldn't be focused on the top-down approach. We should look at the root causes of why these kids are acting up. The mere presence of a web site didn't create all their violent rage -- it was already there to begin with.

4. Sure, censorship is always the answer. |
|
The same old over reaction to a non-issue just because you are aware of it now. This has been going on since at least the 50s, only now there's video of it and a means for you to see it.
This has to be stopped at the social level, it cannot be legislated out of existence. A real step in the right direction would be for schools to stop rewarding and encouraging bullying behavior.

5. Wrong. Fights cannot be stopped. |
|
You are probably a teacher, or someone who accepts the lies of that profession. Let me blow a little reality your way. You cannot stop fights. You have never stopped fights. Fights will go on because teachers cannot teach a child how to behave. Only parents can do that, and parents don't care enough about their children to teach them how to live responsibly.
So take your anti-bully programs and shove them. Until you're willing to call parents on the carpet, to teach their little monsters how NOT to be monsters, you're wasting your time.

6. Right, the parents are the single most important factor, but the anti-bully programs |
|
that you mix your metaphors over are also important. I'm guessing you are/were a bully, since those are the only people that would ever argue in favor of maintaining the current system of abuse and fear that dominates life in school for far too many.

9. No, I was bullied. And folks like YOU did nothing. |
|
The only coherent advice anyone gave me was to let it be "like water rolling off a duck's back." The others just sort of shook their heads and sighed, if they listened at all.
It got to the point where I just stopped talking about it, since you "trained educators" were so damned useless. So I just tolerated the beatings and one incident so bad I won't even mention here, since it would probably melt your tiny mind. Eventually I went to college, where very few bullies exist.
Your programs are useless. Teachers are useless. Bullying will go on forever. People like me will continue to suffer, generation after generation. The only good thing is that some of us people who were bullied will survive, despite the cokehead solutions offered by educators.
The tragedy is that some won't. God, please see to the souls of the gay kids, who are among the most heavily beaten and the ones who die the most.

Not a teacher, one of the guys that guys like you hung out with because we wouldn't stand for that shit, and top percentile in IQ. Both the jocks and the "gangster" gave us a wide berth.
Sorry you didn't go to school where we did.

7. There IS a weird positive aspect to the uploading of these videos |
|
IF the schools or parents call the police, the police only need download the video as proof of what happened. I know it's a sick thought, but if your child was getting beaten, and a video existed - wouldn't you want that as evidence?
Personally, I don't think legislating is the way to go. Fighting always happens, and it's a problem that must be addressed on a personal level. Legislation will just get the videos hidden.

8. Sadly, I think you are right. |

It won't stop, it will just go underground. Kids will put the video on phone chips and trade the chips around secretly and the adults will be none the wiser.
It's the fights that have to be stopped. No fights, no video of fights.
I'm so glad that parents and schools are joining together proactively to try to do something to stop bullying--at least in some places. Obviously bullying will never end when it's just the parents of a bullied child going to the school or the bully's parents and complaining--that only embarrasses the child and oftentimes the parents are responded to with denial ("Our children would never do that") or scorn ("What, is your child too much of a wuss to fend for him/herself?"). There's only one way to handle the situation: make it clear up front that there is zero tolerance for bullying, that bullies and bullying are not to be admired, and that bullies will be punished.

Banning/censoring is an unacceptable response to the problem.
