We just had a pretty good Earthquake....
It's over 75 miles from where I am, and it rolled through the house like a wave, then a jolt at the end...

http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/recenteqsus/Quakes/nn00242527.php

Interesting, I can say I have felt a few in my life and can tell the difference in the motion ...
There's supposed to be a rolling, shaking or jolting with the movement of the plates...cool, and only fun when they are little like this. Then it is just "riding it out"...rather than "hold on !!!!"

I wasn't aware we have been having some shaking going on in that area for a few days... this was the first I had felt or heard of it....I think this is the strongest of the bunch so far. I may just sleep more lightly tonight! :scared: :hide:

1. For those who want to know: Reno Nevada
As a long time inhabitant of Southern California, I can state unequivocally that I do not wake up for quakes under 5.0 ....

And after growing up in the Bay and experiencing the Loma Prieta...the little ones (5 & under) are really "fun" if you know what I mean :) I'm just a weather/science geek I guess!

edit oops!

5. I'm in Oregon now ....
The Loma Prieta is the worst of them .... worse than Sylmar, worse than Landers, worse than Northridge ...

That was one brutal smack in the chops ....

27. Hey, don't dis Northridge!!
I was only a few miles away and my house (and my psyche) were thrashed. Took us months to repair and get moved back in. I measure my life as BQ and AQ. (before and after)

p.s. we are in Tahoe today and this quake woke me up last night. The thing I always wonder about is the epicenter; When you feel a mild one, it could be the "Big One" hundreds of miles away. That's me, always the optimist...

31. No dissin Northridge ...
It was brutal in Downey too ... Seemed to last about 45 seconds for us ... huggin a door jamb and surfing the floor with my wife and kids at 4 in the morning ...

As bad as Northridge was, though; Loma Prieta was stronger and longer ... But hey; they were both bad news ....

Now I'm up here in Portland.

Let's hope we don't get that 9.0 subduction zone quake off the coast any time soon ... :scared:

area. The one I really worry about is the one on the New Madrid fault line in the Midwest. It won't bother me but it sure can tear the hell out of a very heavily populated area.

BTW Journalgirl, my daughter and her husband have a cabin in Tahoe City. They have lived there on and off for several years. Home base is Sacramento. They plan on retiring up there in a few years.

saving her money for law school. It paid off - She's an attorney, now and her husband is an architect.

My folks eloped up here & honeymooned in the cabin, we went for family vacations up here...and then they retired up here. They live in the carson valley now, the snow got to be too much...

29. The whole mid west has a hard unified rock layer and sediment on top.
When the earth shakes it travels far and the damage is greater. My wife felt the Illinois quake (5.2) all the way in Lexington Ky. It rattled glasses and dishes here. It was felt in Canada. The last big New Madrid shake rang steeple bells in New England.

geez...we are always moving out here aren't we?

ya, I feel sorry for the mid-western folks who have had some trembles lately. It can be scary, especially if you don't know what it feels like, what to 'expect', etc. And those waves move BIGtime through the bedrock...

21. Mogul, near Verdi, just outside Reno, is where they're having a lot
25, 30 a day have been reported over the last few weeks -- since February maybe even. My boss lives there, and his wife told me today they've been very stressful. They're small, and don't last long. But, then, ya never know if it's gonna be the big one!

After the one we had Thursday, we had two during the night. It was reminiscent of having a newborn -- sitting straight up in bed every four hours on cue.

got the kids out of bed and all. It was a 4.9, although, the news said maybe only a 4.7. Had just another after shock a minute ago --

Whatever it was, we had a few things fall and move around. No major damage, though.

edit typo -- my hands are still shaking, lol.

It's hard to calm down for a while... you keep expecting another one or thinking you feel another one... aftershocks don't help much for the comfort factor...

hope you and the kids get some sleep!

20. My 8 year-old is the one who is really scared
Took a while to get her back to bed. I thought she might be back up from the aftershock we just now had -- we had three on Thursday when all three of my kids and some neighborhood kids were all sitting at the dinner table. It was a 4.2, I think, and since then, she's been pretty focused on it all. She's at that age where it seems the more you discuss it, the more worried she gets, so I try to back off a bit -- tell her what she needs to know, assure her we're as prepared as we can be, and then move on to something positive.

Anyway, I'm surprised you felt it 75 miles away!

Sleep? My adrenaline is going now. And I was just about to pack it in for the night.

26. some experts are wondering about the weight of the ice at the

poles being reduced by melting water, and that water expanding the middle belt of the globe, or putting more weight on the middle ring of the earth --- would cause more shifts in the plates.

...make sure you get your supplies and read up on taking care of the pets.

It may never happen again, but knowing what to do and being prepared comes in handy when the unexpected occurs.

Barbara Boxer has http://boxer.senate.gov/services/CAlinks/earthquake">some tips

California has a http://www.seismic.ca.gov">Seismic Safety Commission (scroll down on the left hand side, under the section called "Be Prepared")

The Los Angeles Fire Department has an online http://lafd.org/eqbook.pdf">booklet, which has lots of info to make you less jittery the next time there is an earthquake. The kits are also good to have on hand in case of any emergency.

And, last but not least, the county of Santa Clara has some great stuff for http://www.sccgov.org/portal/site/scc/chlevel3?path=%2Fv7%2FSCC%20Public%20Portal%2FHandling%20Emergencies%2FDisaster%20Planning%20for%20Animals%2FPlanning%20for%20Your%20Pet">your pets.

30. When I was little, I knew all about earthquakes and crevasses.
In an earthquake, a crack in the ground would open. You never went down into them (to see what was there) because they would close up on you. My plan was that if I was ever in an earthquake, I'd drop a stick or a leaf down any crevasse I found and close it up so everyone would be safe.

Been in a few small ones as an adult and no, have never found a crevasse to drop a leaf into.
