Army Special Forces Staff Sgt. Jason Logan Brown 29, of Clarksville, Tenn., was born in Dallas on Sept. 30, 1978 to James C. and Rosemary Brown. He departed this life on Thursday, April 17, 2008 in Sama Village, Iraq.
Jason was engaged in combat in Sama Village when he was killed by a burst of small arms fire as he attempted to capture an Al-Qaeda leader. Jason was a Special Forces Engineer Sergeant assigned to Company B, 3rd Battalion, 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne) based at Fort Campbell Army Post in Kentucky. He was serving his second tour in Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Jason graduated from DeSoto High School in DeSoto in 1997. He attended and graduated from Sam Houston State University in Huntsville with a Bachelor's degree in criminal justice in 2002. Jason volunteered for enlistment into the Army on March 25, 2003 as a candidate for Special Forces and earned the coveted Green Beret in 2004. Jason's vast military education included the Special Forces Advanced Urban Combat Course, Jumpmaster Course, Free Fall Parachutist Course, Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape Course, Basic Noncommissioned Officer Course, Warrior Leaders Course, Basic Airborne Course, and Special Forces Qualification Course and Advanced Explosive Techniques Course.
His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, the Purple Heart, a Meritorious Service Medal, an Army Commendation Medal, an Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Medal, Combat Infantryman's Badge, Military Free Fall Parachutist Badge, Master Parachutist Badge and Special Forces Tab.
The pride of Jason and his family was his service for his country as a Green Beret. What his friends liked about him most were his sense of humor, his outgoing personality, his willingness to always lend a helping hand, and especially his love for life. He enjoyed the outdoors. In his free time, he hunted, fished and worked in his yard.
Jason is survived by his daughter, Alyssa Gomez of Cypress; his parents, James C. and Rosemary Brown of Cartwright, Okla.; sister, Lindsey Lam and husband Dallas of Austin; grandmother, Emma Lee Brown of Durant, Okla.
