1. OK, but what do they mean "in vibrant comics form"?
Now Howard Zinn, historian Paul Buhle, and cartoonist Mike Konopacki have collaborated to retell, in vibrant comics form, a most immediate and relevant chapter of A People’s History: the centuries-long story of America’s actions in the world.

As an adult, I prefer reading actual words to comics, no matter how "vibrant".

2. It's a comic book with a lot of words in it
Basically an illustrated and updated version of People's History.

Not quite as long but still very informative.

3. You aren't the target audience for that book
You would want to read A People's History of the United States, by Howard Zinn, instead. If you haven't already done so, I recommend that you do.

4. as an adult with more letters behind my name then I care to admit...I prefer mediums that reach a
common level so everyone can become informed.

5. A lot of people can grok both words and pictures.
Too bad about your disability, but you might want to give it another try.

8. How many non-fiction comic books are in your personal library?
Just curious. I don't have any.

10. Not sure how many.
Jon Stewart's "America (The Book): A Citizen's Guide to Democracy Inaction" was the most recent. But if you have some aversion to illustrations and visuals, Zinn's History is available in both text and and audio formats. I assume you have never read it. Do yourself a favor, and read it.

11. I can only find the "vibrant comics form".
The Amazon listing is here. Where is the text-only version?

Silly person. I don't have an "aversion to illustrations and visuals". What a dumb thing to say. I just don't like to get my history in "vibrant comics form". I don't think that is so unusual among serious readers like myself.

By the way, I read Zinn's original book in the early 80s and still have it on my shelf today.

12. Too bad. You're missing out on a vital component of America art
Try picking up some Harvey Pekar or Art Speigelman. The Action Philosophers series is a humorous introduction to some of the giants of philosophy.

You might actually want to start with Scott McCloud's Understanding Comics, and then proceed to some of the above authors and books. McCloud will aptly explain to you why comics (an unfortunate name for what should really be called sequential art) are as valid a medium for artistic expression as any other form of human expression. You'll come away with a new appreciation for the form as a method of storytelling.

6. "Graphic Novel?" Is that what this is?
I think that's a powerful format, depending on how well it's done.

Graphic novels are not just for kids - in fact, most the ones I've seen are especially *not* for kids at all. Some fine stuff out there. Kudos to them for doing this!

7. Unfortunately it's not fictional
Although I guess there's no term for "History with comic book Illustrations"

9. It reminds me of the opening of "Alice In Wonderland".
Edited on Mon Apr-28-08 06:46 AM by mwb970
Alice was beginning to get very tired of sitting by her sister on the bank, and of having nothing to do: once or twice she had peeped into the book her sister was reading, but it had no pictures or conversations in it, "and what is the use of a book," thought Alice, "without pictures or conversations?"

I have a number of non-fiction books on my reading pile right now. None of them have pictures or conversations. I would not expect a child to find them interesting.
