Unemployment Rate Dips To 5 Percent

POSTED: 7:26 am EDT May 2, 2008

WASHINGTON --

Employers cut far fewer jobs in April than in recent months and the unemployment rate dropped to 5 percent, a better-than-expected showing that still revealed strains in the nation's crucial labor market.

For the fourth month in a row, the economy lost jobs, the Labor Department reported Friday. But in April the losses totaled 20,000, an improvement from the 81,000 reductions in payrolls logged in March. Job losses for both February and March turned out to be a bit deeper than previously reported.

The latest snapshot of the nationwide employment conditions- - while clearly still weak -- was better than many economists were expected.

On Thursday, the Labor Department reported that jobless claims rose by 35,000 last week to 380,000.
The total number of people receiving benefit checks is now more than 3 million for the first time in four years.

In other signs of economic stress, the Commerce Department reported a 1.1-percent drop in construction spending in March and housing activity slipped by a record 4.6 percent.

The numbers show builders are still cutting back amid the worst housing slump in more than two decades.

1. And even those figures are "cooked"
They haven't been legitimate for years, going back to the Clinton era.

2. Oh, I know...they stopped counting in 2001.
If one falls off the roles for a claim, they aren't counted.

6. I wouldn't be surprised on that! He lied about AIDS, the homeless,
and many other things that affected the American people in the pocketbook.

7. he's the one who magically removed workers from the unemployed
once their unemployment benefits ended.

under raygun, they also began (or at least aggressively escalated) the practice of statistically predicting a number of new jobs that would be created in the period following a number of layoffs and counting them as though they were actual employment rather than a statistical fabrication.

4. I don't know but it has to be more than
3 million. Many aren't counted anymore and how many undocumented don't apply for unemployment?
