Most Georgia legislative incumbents unopposed
In the aftermath of this year's unproductive legislative session, a recent poll showed widespread dissatisfaction among Georgia voters with their representatives in the General Assembly.

But that "throw-out-the-bums" mentality did not translate into a rush of candidates willing to take on House and Senate incumbents.

As the deadline for candidate qualifying fell at noon Friday, 27 of the 56 senators had not drawn an opponent. Barring unlikely independent challenges, that left 18 Republicans and nine Democrats assured of re-election six months before voters go to the polls.

On the House side, 69 Republicans and 41 Democrats are unopposed, according to the secretary of state's office, depriving voters in 110 of the 180 House districts of a choice of candidates in November.

Even fewer races will be contested by the two parties. Counting three Senate districts that will feature a Republican primary this summer but don't have a Democrat on the ballot, the GOP is guaranteed to hold at least 21 Senate seats come January.

1. I suspect that this is due to gerrymandering
making the most seats safe for any given party.

3. I don't buy that. There's no way I can believe that a lot of people
here are happy with what Sonny Perdue and his Pub crowd have done since they've taken over. The only politician I know of who's doing a pretty good job is the Mayor of Atlanta, Shirly Franklin, and she's a Dem! I might add that she's doing a hell of a lot better than her MALE predicessors, some of whom are now in prison! I don't live in the City of Atlanta, but I still love Shirly!

I just get the feeling Ga. doesn't have any Dems who want to be bothered!

9. Hell! We all know women are superior to MALEs in every meaningful way
except task that are repugnant or require physical labor.

What's your point?

10. My point is that, at least around me, all the politicians are Pubs, and
yea, men. I don't have a bias for or against gender, but I have a real problem when there's never any Dems even trying to get elected! I mentioned Shirly because she's on TV a lot, and I met her at a Dean meetup several years ago. She's a very nice person and a GOOD Mayor!

I'd do everything possible to get more Dems elected here, but no Dem want's to even try!

5. Yea I know, but so far, nobody has ever even made any accusations of a problem.
I contacted the Sec. of State's office back in 2001 when they were talking about adopting the Diebold machines, and complained that there's no way to do a recount if it would be necessary, but all I got was a line of BS and nothing has happened since. I can't generate any outrage if nobody complains about anything!

6. Rob Georgia in 2002 was certainly a problem
and, if you believe the AJC polling just before the election, the statistics are pretty damning.

4. It is absolutely due to gerrymandering.
I have hopeful that the "trickle down" effect will be strong on the next go around.
All 13 of our 13 Congressional Districts have Dems running. The GOP didn't win overnight in this state and we won't rebound overnight either.

7. Ohh Ruby, I understand that, but if nobody runs agains the
incumbant Pubs, there's not even a CHANCE of recovery! You have no idea how pissed off I get when I vote and got through pages of unopposed Pubs on the damn ballot! It's not only now! I saw that same thing when we moved here in 2000!

8. have you seen how they rigged Jack Kingston's district?
he's a Congressman and not a local official, but damn it's a thing of creative beauty.

He gets the hicks, the farmers, and the military (5 bases)
