Save the Polar Bears and Strong-Arm a Frank Dialogue about Catastrophic Climate Change!
Straight from the mouth of the enemy: Dr. Kenneth Green, of conservative cesspool, *ahem* "thinktank" the American Enterprise Institute for Public Policy Research is scared shitless that the polar bear might be added to the Endagered Species Act:

http://www.newsweek.com/id/135587/page/1

"NEWSWEEK: What decision is the Interior Department likely to make?

Dr. Kenneth Green: The administration will likely list the bear as threatened. And after that they'll punt it into the next administration, which will have to come in and start a planning process to develop a protection plan for the bears. I would expect there to be a conflict over the extent of the plan. Of course, if chose not to list the polar bear, somebody would undoubtedly re-petition to relist the polar bear and all the regulatory timetables and clocks would start ticking again"

Ooooh how interesting. Wouldn't want the Bush Administration to fix corporate pollution, corruption, and cronyism. So tell us Kenny Boy, what would that mean?:

"NEWSWEEK: In either scenario, what kind of political and legal debate would follow?

Dr. Kenneth Green:Well, if protection is offered, environmental groups will file suit calling for suing carbon-emitting companies that violate the Clean Air Act. Then they'll go back to court to sue the government for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Then a judge will have to say, "Well, will that do anything to improve polar bear habitat or not?" Then there will be a fight over what's actually causing melt, and whether the climate models predicting deep rates of change are meaningful predictors"

Wow. One cute fluffy species can do all that?

"NEWSWEEK: Is there apprehension that listing the bear signals acceptance that climate change is caused by humans?

Dr. Kenneth Green: Absolutely. The realization has always been that if you list the polar bear, because its range is the entire Arctic, your ability to exploit the Arctic is essentially done. But that's really only part of it. A much bigger part is that because the assumed nature of the endangerment is greenhouse gas emissions, it would empower groups to sue the government to force the abatement of the gasses.

(emphasis mine) woooo scary! So what should any good red-blooded conservative do to stop all this nonsense? Turns out there are LOTS of things that should be considered according to Kenny Boy: :eyes:

1. Remember your Rovian Battle Tactics Contra-Environmentalist Primary Strategy!: deny the evidence!: ((I) haven't seen convincing evidence...to draw that conclusion")("The information on polar bear trends is all modeled. It's just statistics"),

2. Remember that America MUST be #1 in all things! Even emissions! To stop polluting would send a message of weakness to the COMMIES! China, Russia and India do it so WHY CAN'T WE :cry:  ("it is implausible to think the world is going to turn around...when the leading emitter, China...India, an up-and-coming emitter, wants nothing to do with it, and neither does Russia")

3. Remind Everyone that any individual who falls on hard times has nobody to blame but him/herself because the USA is the Great Land of Opportunity for all. Polar bears are American citizens too and have all the same opportunities so they DESERVE to go extinct if they can't pull their damn selves up by the bootstraps and get off Government assistance programs! ("If the species is going extinct because of nothing that humans are doing, you don't put them under the Endangered Species Act")

4. Radical Liberal Propaganda has Inflated the Problem as Always to get attention. Oh and by the way we don't REALLY know how many polar bears belong there anyway ("The thing that nobody's asking is "What's actually earth's right number of polar bears?" The answer is that there is no right answer")

5.If these strategies fail, ABANDON SHIP ABANDON SHIP! Since it's not our problem to begin with: ("There's this hubris in human nature that says "We must be able to do something about it." But there are times that nature presents us with things we can't do anything about"). Hopefully you will be out of the Administration before you're proven wrong and some pest decides to try.

Even if those Al Gore Starfuckers try Anything, It's Too Late and We're Fucked Regardless So we Might as Well Do Nothing: ("The latent extra degree of warming is already in the climate system from carbon emissions that have already been expelled. You're not going to be able to turn that around. Too late.")

Well, some of us don't think it's too late to try to reverse or even just stop some of the damage. We have two weeks before this matter is decided by the Department of the Interior. I could find only one petition:
http://www.gopetition.com/petitions/protect-our-polar-bears-under-the-endangered-species-act.html

It's a start! If you care, sign it, pass it on. Tell Secretary of the Interior Dirk Kempthorne how you feel: http://www.doi.gov/contact.html Contact your representatives!

Feel free to post other activism items in this thread. The Bush Administration is scared of the pola bear. Let's show them how hard she bites!
