I just spent $22 on a locking gas cap.
I accidentally left my gas cap at a service station a couple of weeks ago, so I needed one anyway.

But I figured, now is the time- people are getting desperate, and if you aren't parking in a locked garage every night... somebody might come along to siphon your tank.

2. We had them back in the 1970's because people were stealing gas

from other people's tanks. I've thought about getting one for my vehicle also.

Gas over $120 a barrel this morning.

6. That probably won't stop them.
The new thing is that they just walk up to your car and puncture the gas tank. I think it's primarily diesel trucks being hit but the same thing is possible with cars.

8. yep, several months ago...
someone siphoned most of a tank of gas out of my car. We put locking gas caps on all of our vehicles. At the time, I wondered why we had ever stopped. It's not like gas has ever really gone down again. We will never see 1973 prices again. It is unlikely that we will ever see 2000 prices again.

The first thing that I noticed was that the locking gas caps have gone way up in price. The next thing I noticed is that most of the gas cap is now plastic so you have to be pretty careful each time that you unlock and remove it or it will break. My brother has already broken one and had to replace it.

11. Yeah, a regular cap was about $6
but the first place I went to didn't have one that fit my car. The salesman referred me to another store, and on the way over I decided to get a locking one. I just put $25 worth of gas in the car this morning and the tank is only half full. When it costs $50 to fill up my 16 gallon tank, its worth buying a lock. It won't deter someone who is really determined- but the average thief will move on to the next vehicle.

9. I was driving down a residential street early Sunday morning...
and there were three cars in a row with their gas caps hanging out. I figured someone had made a "purchase" during the night and there were going to be some upset people when they discovered what had happened.

We are experiencing a lot of drive-aways at gas stations, too. Probably double or triple what it normally is.

14. Geez. I had to replace a gas tank once
but that was because of rust. I'll bet its not cheap.

13. Fortunately, my car is parked right in front of my door
since I live in a mobile home. And I have a burglar alarm on the car and a Rottweiler with a loud bark, but I just may buy a locking cap anyway.

15.  I wonder whether a locking gas cap increases the risk of having your tank punctured
It would suck a lot to have gas siphoned out of the tank, but if thieves can't get in easily and decide to take another approach, having the tank punctured to get the gas out would suck even worse.

Sad that we have to worry about this kind of thing.

16. Well, in a neighborhood where everyone's car is outside
I think a thief would just move on to a vehicle with an unlocked tank. Puncturing could be pretty messy and dangerous, and since my type of car doesn't have an enormous tank, the reward wouldn't outweigh the risk. That's my hope.
