Gas prices are only going to go up |
|
I've posted this a few times today, but I thought I would just make it it's own post and be done with it. There is no way to legislate lower gas prices.
Most drivers are still in denial. It is not going to change, gas prices aren't coming down ever - ethanol/biofuel is not really a solution and in light of the world food crisis should be banned. Cutting gas taxes isn't a solution: it might reduce prices by a few cents for a few days - at a cost of billions to government, but within a few weekes you wouldn't be able to tell that anything had been done.
It should also be said that people don't even have a real right to be angry. Anyone who was paying attention has known this was coming for 30 years now and no one did anything, because it wasn't something voters were interested in.
The reality is people have to stop commuting, get on busses and trains and get ready to give up their cars (unless they are very rich). People can rail against this all they like, they can remain in denial but it isn't going to change a thing - and any politician who tells you differently is lying.
The gas tax holiday won't change a thing - if oil companies are forced to pay the tax, they will raise prices

2. Maybe a little, for a little while |

but only if the government pays for it and takes on further debt, they are rising at the same rate all over the world.

12. The corporate welfare given to Big Oil |
|
was a quid pro quo for lowering prices in the fall of 2006. Undoubtedly they'll promise the same this time, but don't expect the oil companies do do more than knock fifty cents off whatever the top is this summer.
Big Oil is bracing for a Democratic administration. They know those corporate giveaways are probably history.

Me too... I didn't think we'd be dealing with a situation this serious in 2008. It really is a massive problem. Unfortunately, the public's attention continues to get monopolized by the same handful of issues. We might be paying closer attention now, but it's way too little too late. A plan of attack 30 years ago would be making a big difference now. All in hindsight, I suppose.

The fall of the dollar is horrible... and it has awful consequences internationally. Americans are really taking a bath in terms of goods, services, and even travel.

9. chrysler is starting a promotion where you'll get $2.99 gas for 3 years... |
|
Edited on Tue May-06-08 02:00 PM by QuestionAll
you're limited to 700 gallons per year- but if gas is $10/gallon within 3 years, it could be worth a bundle. http://abcnews.go.com/WN/story?id=4791989&page=1

I agree with you wholeheartedly (and I think the gas tax holiday is hogwash).
I'm still angry.
I'm angry at Bush for pretending he could "sway" his friends in oil
I'm angry at people who voted for that crap.
I'm angry at the auto manufacturers and politicians who haven't addressed the obvious need for fuel efficiency.
I'm angry at the city managers/planners, etc. who didn't do their job. They didn't PLAN for the obvious.

14. If you are rich enough to be able to afford to drive in the future... |
|
Edited on Tue May-06-08 03:31 PM by Jack_DeLeon
it will be nice because there wont be so much traffic.
Also there will be less pollution.
Unfortunately I dont think I'll be able to afford it. I'm just going to have to hope I find a good enough place to settle down and try to be be somewhat self sufficient as modern society comes abruptly to a halt.
