Let's not forget the lack of enthusiasm for McCain
McCain won by default in the primaries. None of his opponents were acceptable. So, he stuck it out till, one by one, they imploded. Only then did the party faithful, grudgingly, give it to him. That's not a good way to start.

Even now, 25-30% of GOP primary voters are willing to drive to the polls, park, and then stand in line, just to vote against him. Whoa. That's gotta hurt.

1. More than that, many voted Democratic, albeit for various reasons.

2. Many? I'm doubting it.
First, I'll admit that my evidence for that is entirely impressionistic. But I read a number of right wing blogs/boards. And I see a bunch of posters cheering on Limpballs "Operation Chaos" and then they'll say that they thought about doing it, but... then they talk about voting in a local race or some other issue important to them. It takes effort to go change your registration (in a closed primary state) just to go vote against somebody. I have no doubt it happened. but I doubt it really happened much.

3. Exit polls suggest Repukes were 7-11% of the Dem Vote in most of the
contests.

6. Interesting.
link? Is this higher than prior years, especially where crossover voting is allowed in primary elections?

4. The only reason he won is because the conservative candidates knocked each other out
The Republican voters split between Romney and Huckabee and left McCain standing

5. And now they're stuck with someone they can't stand.
McCain has the uncanny ability to piss everyone off.
