Oops! Another US accusation proves ill-founded

Posted by Helena Cobban at May 9, 2008 12:57 PM

Remember all the 'WMD programs' the Bushites told us there were in Iraq, pre-2003?

So more recently, they've been telling us about the "Iranian arms" that have been flowing in to non-governmental or anti-governmental forces inside Iraq. Last week, the US commanders in Iraq even planned a big "show and tell" event in Karbala at which thousands of Iranian-supplied arms that had been seized by the US and their Iraqi allies would be shown off to the media before being destroyed.

*********************

But guess what. The LA Times's Tina Sussman tells us that the event
http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/babylonbeyond/2008/05/iraq-the-elusiv.html

was canceled after the United States realized none of them was from Iran...

Iran... continues to seethe after an Iraqi delegation went to Tehran last week to confront it with the (arms-supply) accusations. It has denied the accusations, and it says as long as U.S. forces continue to take part in military action in Iraq's Shiite strongholds, it won't consider holding further talks with Washington on how to stabilize Iraq.

******************************

This administration seems to have a just about unique capacity for both belligerence and incompetence. This is an extremely dangerous combination.

I'm surprised that stopped them. I would have thought they'd supply the 'evidence' if needed. (Which is why I was always surprised that no WMD were "found".)

Why not just go ahead, show a bunch of weapons of some kind, & claim they're from Iran? The goddam M$M sure as hell aren't gonna investigate.

19. Oooh, and bravely announced in the major media
Er, on the blog of the LA Times. Yep, this will be a major lead story on all the news stations . . . not.

Instead, after about 48 hours of kerfuffle from us dirty fucking hippies, the administration will go right back to telling its lies about who's supplying what in Iraq, and the stenographers in the media pool will take it down and publish or broadcast it without a scintilla of skepticism, and without informing their audiences that it's just so much bullshit.

24. Exactly
And the wide audience of the exceedingly casual minded will conclude that the U.S. has the proof that Iran has been supplying weapons to Iraqi freedom fighter--um, insurgents--and look the other way when American bombs fly away. Realize that every bomb that goes poof is dollars in the pocket for Bush's base (each exploded bomb will have to be replaced by a new bomb, kaching!).

This is how it's done. "They hate us for our freedoms" "Saddam Hussein is in cahoots with Bin Laden" etc. etc. etc. Sand in the eyes of the sheeple public as they redirect current and future tax dollars into the hands of their priviledged few.

7. So where *did* the weapons come from?
Edited on Fri May-09-08 12:33 PM by Marr
It seems unlikely that they'd cancel the propaganda event just because the weapons weren't actually Iranian. Am I being paranoid if I suspect the weapons may have originated from one of the "allies" of the Bush Administration?

9. That's more likely in this case
The fact that the evidence wasn't credible never stopped them before(Iranian IEDs anyone?).

I think you called it correctly. Our weapons shipments to the insurgents must have gotten seized by accident, and since the people who were doing the seizing din't know about the "approved arms", they went ahead and did what they always do.

What a faux pas

20. Well, Jesus, so the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung finds out
that the weapons came from, like Israel or something...think anybody in the US would ever hear about it? We still got lots of people who think that the only reason we didn't find the WMD is they all got spirited off to Syria or something.

25. I share your view on the matter
Frankly, I'm surprised Bushco didn't fly a nuke factory and one of our working nukes in during the invasion and plan it under one of Saddam's palaces, or even simply claim that they found them and were currently disassembling them and disposing of them "as we speak."

Something must have happened, though, for them to cancel the press conference and admit that the weapons were not Iranian. Weird.

31. No Judith Miller to plant the story? An anti-Judith Miller was going to be there?
I'm guessing someone who knew details about things, really knew shit, was going to show up. Iraq has gotten to be such a wild thing that they can't really control who's there and who's not. There was going to be person who was a wild card there in my opinion, someone who would call the bluff.

Find out who was scheduled to attend that press conference and you'll know why it was cancelled.

They must have come from an ally of the Bush administration, or they would have been all over it. Perhaps they were even US arms.

34. The US and Iran are both conning their constituents.
Neither want the Iraqi nationalists to emerge as the country's leaders. If so the world would see that the Sunni Shiite "split" in Iraq is largely a fraud. The threats against Iran are to insure they keep backing Nuri al Maliki the puppet of choice.

43. I've mailed this to media, with reminders of their complicity in the Iraq war
Can others do the same?

The media has told us so many times now that Iranian weapons are killing our soldiers it is virtually common knowledge...and now the one opportunity the administration staged to present evidence has NOTHING to show.

Anyone with a good list of media emails? It is easy to sit around and say they aren't giving it any play, but much more satisfying to light a fire under them with good cause.
