EARTHQUAKE or other EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS!!
Edited on Mon May-12-08 04:59 AM by ColbertWatcher
I've posted this before, but thought it was a good idea to post again, in case people might not have the links. ON EDIT: improved grammar!

The http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/recenteqsww/Quakes/us2008ryan.php">7.8 earthquake in China is Mother Nature's way of reminding you to check your earthquake or emergency kit!

Knowing what to do and being prepared comes in handy when the unexpected occurs.

The state of California has an

And, last but not least, the county of Santa Clara has some great stuff for http://www.sccgov.org/portal/site/scc/chlevel3?path=%2Fv7%2FSCC%20Public%20Portal%2FHandling%20Emergencies%2FDisaster%20Planning%20for%20Animals%2FPlanning%20for%20Your%20Pet">your pets.

(Also added on edit) Please respond to this post with any online links you recommend, and when the next reminder happens, I will add it for a new version!

1. And as a Colbert watcher,
I'm sure you have anti-bear spray in your emergency kit. I know I do. Can't be too careful. :)

Are Your Prepared
In a major disaster, it might be several days before vital services are restored.
San Francisco is exposed to a wide variety of hazards, both natural and man-made. Earthquakes, fires, severe storms, power outages, and acts of terrorism are just some of the potential emergencies we may encounter.

Imagine that you have no electricity, no gas, no water and no telephone service. Imagine that all the businesses are closed and you are without any kind of emergency services. What will you do until help arrives?

Click on the buttons to the right to find out how you can prepare yourself and your family for an emergency. You can also learn what to do in response to a specific disaster, like a tsunami, just in case.

6. umm don't forget to print out these on line sources
in 1989 it took 3-4 days to restore electricity in parts of SF. Over in my neighborhood in Oakland we didn't get the gas turned back on for 2 days in my neighborhood.

I think state and local disaster response is ok but have no great hopes about the federal level.

10. It's true period.

I guess it's nice if someone does do something for you, but I wouldn't expect anyone to do anything to help me.

11. True, but...
... no man is an island.

Your self-sufficiency may be the help someone else might need.

Maybe not directly, but perhaps through example.

16. I'm not spouting some "save yourself" bullshit. If a disaster hits here I expect to die
I do not expect anyone to do anything to save me, and see nothing special about myself that would allow me to save myself.
