What do you think of PAC's?
My husband's union is pressuring my husband to donate to the PAC. He feels it leads to corruption. I personally don't understand them. I'm concerned the union officials will black-list him if he doesn't "voluntarily" donate. My husband says it's extortion.

What do you think of PAC's? Thanks.

1. To even the playing field between union pacs and corporate pacs...
Edited on Tue May-13-08 02:14 PM by ret5hd
every stockholder should be required to fill out a card authorizing a portion of his/her dividends may be witheld to fund the corporate pac. No card, no withholding.

Then lets see how long those corp pacs last.

and on edit: you got quite a right-wing POV of unions, dontcha?

2. My husband has been in that union for 10 years

They blacklist the uncooperative ones and promote people who keep their mouth shut. They're corrupt and don't have the employee's interest at heart.

Edited for clarity.

3. Apply for management then. I'm sure they're looking for a few good men/women.
But i know you're not REALLY looking for answers of solutions.

5. I'm asking for advice
I admitted I know nothing about them and thought this would be the right place to find out. I truly have no agenda other than looking for some friendly advice.

4. In theory, at least, PACs aren't all bad
Candidate's election campaigns are very expensive, and PAC contributions go a long way to help pay for them. I would assume that the union's PAC would be contributing to candidates who are pro-labor, so contributing to the PAC might help get someone elected who is good for your personal interests.

There is no doubt in my mind, however, that the largest PACs (in my state, it's trial lawyers) get preferential treatment, and that is corrupt -- but that corruption won't go away by NOT contributing to a PAC.

6. That's what I was looking for with my question
Common sense answers. Thank you.

My husband thinks $95/month is steep, and I guess he's seen too much. He's working for a huge corp. at an oil refinery at the moment. Since he's good at what he does, they gave him the Superintendent job this week because the real Super is on vacation. He won't be paid Super wages, because it's "too much paperwork". He is expected to keep his mouth shut and take on the extra responsibility for nothing extra in his paycheck. The union rep encourages him to just suck it up and be quiet.

That's why we have such a bad attitude about his union. If you don't complain about being taken advantage of, you work all the time, no matter your place on the Out of Work list.
