James Garner undergoes surgery after stroke
James Garner undergoes surgery after stroke
By Steve Gorman

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Actor James Garner, best known for starring in the classic television series "Maverick" and "The Rockford Files," underwent surgery this week after suffering a minor stroke, his spokeswoman said on Tuesday.

Garner, 80, who built a six-decade career playing ruggedly charming, good-natured anti-heroes, suffered a stroke at home last Friday and was admitted to a Los Angeles-area hospital, publicist Jennifer Allen said.

The actor underwent surgery on Sunday, and his prognosis following the operation was described as "very positive," Allen said, adding that Garner's vital signs were good and that he was conscious and "responsive."

Allen said Garner was expected to be discharged from the hospital soon, but she had no further details about the circumstances of Garner's stroke or his condition.

2. So he didn't go through surgery before the stroke?
Just for fun? ;)

Glad he is doing ok. A lot of memories of him. Which I guess means I am getting (or am) old.

9. The generally don't do the angiogram until after a TIA
at the very least. Carotid ultrasounds allow them to visualize the blood flow in the left carotid and the right external carotid, but the right internal carotid must be visualized by an angiogram.

They generally don't do the surgery unless an angiogram has shown at least 95% blockage because it's still one of the higher risk surgeries.

My guess is that if he's had a stroke, it was a mild one with a good chance of full recovery if they're discharging him home instead of rehab.

He's donated to Wellstone, Kucinich, and even Bernie Sanders, among others. I've read a number of interviews with him that have turned towards politics, and he's always come off to me not only as liberal, but as particularly thoughtful and engaging.

12. Love the guy--he always reminded me of my father, who he bore some resemblance
to both physically and in manner. One of my very earliest memories was watching "Maverick" with the whole family around the Zenith!

I survived a TIA and the risly surgery (yes, even at my young age), may he do the same.

Here's to you, Jim. :toast:

They made over 300 Polaroid commercials. The ads were so successful that Hartley
had a t-shirt printed with the message "I am not James Garner's wife" on it.

30. Yeah, that isn't one of their better ones
The best, most hilarious commercials were the ones where they got funny digs in at each other. I think that's why so many people thought they were married.

Have to hand it to Polaroid, it's not easy to come up with a winning marketing scheme that sticks the brand name in the minds of the audience, but the Garner & Hartley commercials worked.

27. I love James Garner
One of the best anti-war films ever is one of his films "The Americanization of Emily".

Lt. Cmdr. Charles E. Madison: I'm not sentimental about war. I see nothing noble in widows.

Lt. Cmdr. Charles E. Madison: War isn't hell at all. It's man at his best; the highest morality he's capable of. It's not war that's insane, you see. It's the morality of it. It's not greed or ambition that makes war: it's goodness. Wars are always fought for the best of reasons: for liberation or manifest destiny. Always against tyranny and always in the interest of humanity. So far this war, we've managed to butcher some ten million humans in the interest of humanity. Next war it seems we'll have to destroy all of man in order to preserve his damn dignity. It's not war that's unnatural to us, it's virtue. As long as valor remains a virtue, we shall have soldiers. So, I preach cowardice. Through cowardice, we shall all be saved.

Get well soon, Mr. Garner!

It was a hoot. Many of those involved in that series went on to Rockford.

39. Ode to Maverick
Who is the tall, dark stranger there?

Maverick is the name.

Ridin’ the trail to who knows where,

Luck is his companion. Gamblin’ is his game.

Smooth as the handle on a gun.

Maverick is the name.

Wild as the wind in Oregon,

Blowin’ up a canyon, easier to tame.

Riverboat, ring your bell. Fare thee well, Annabel.

Luck is the lady that he loves the best.

Natchez to New Orleans. Livin' on jacks and queens

Maverick is a legend of the west.

Riverboat, ring your bell. Fare thee well, Annabel.

Luck is the lady that he loves the best.

Natchez to New Orleans. Livin' on jacks and queens

Maverick is a legend of the west.

Maverick is a legend of the west.

Too many dusty trail towns

Too few and far between

Tired saloons and sawdust-covered floors

Too many one-more-showdowns

And aces over queens

Winning's just a way of keepin' score.

My old Pappy always told me

Your fate is in your hands

Stand pat or draw - it's yours to choose

Luck don't have a thing to do

With how you play the game

Maverick didn't come here to loose.

Maverick didn't come here to loose.

Maverick didn't come here to loose.
