My proposal for a Telecom Immunity Compromise

Instead of indemnifying the telecoms out of the taxpayer pocket (Bush says it would cost too much money, but the real reason is because they know that the Discovery process would provide the evidence to put Bush officials in jail).

So, let's take the money excuse off the table.

Let's set the maximum civil and criminal penalty at a $100 fine for any telecom company or executive who broke the law, provided they agree to full disclosure, and agree to testify under oath.

Then, the telecoms won't have to worry about financial ruin, or having their executives thrown in jail, and the government won't be able to cite the high cost of indemnifying them as an excuse.

A $100 fine for AT&T-- provided they fully disclose everything, and agree to testify under oath.

And then we can prosecute the Bush Administration.

I called my State Representative, and his staffer on the phone seemed downright enthusiastic about the idea, and said she would pass it along.

Provided someone get Nancy Pelosi off the table, and find Harry Reid a pair of balls somewhere.

1. The Democrats already tried that

well, something like that.

They proposed that the US Gov pay any damages awarded in any trial, but the Telecoms would still have to go to trial.

the Repukes wouldn't even consider it.

2. Right. That was called Indemnification. They used the money as an excuse to reject it.

Indemnification means that you can sue AT&T for millions of dollars, and if they lose, the money comes from the taxpayer.

My proposal does away with the "too expensive" excuse, by limiting exposure to $100.

But lawsuits can still proceed.

The Telecoms will pay their $100 fines, and we'll have truckloads of evidence to prosecute the Bushies.
