How many of you remember the old "fuck the South" posts
Edited on Thu May-15-08 09:24 PM by Elwood P Dowd
from a few years ago? There were more than a few DUers pushing the party to just totally abandon the South. There were more than a few mocking Howard Dean for his 50-state strategy.

1. Yes, I was almost one of them.
After reading books like "Whistling past Dixie".

I came to my senses.

3. It's only because of your votes that I prefer we don't isolate and
let "The South" bleed dry. Yeah, sure, we "need" your votes. On the flipside of the argument, how about you live under a Republican rule, and find out in a few years that greed doesn't work, and come back groveling for money and attention?

15. I have an animated cartogram of population by state that I show in some of my classes
Florida becomes noticeably erect over the last century. It's really funny - most of the kids start laughing after the second or third time I run it...

10. Howard is 100% right to compete everywhere
Nebraska is a southern state politically. We have the reddest district in the nation in Western Nebraska, but I can see the results already. Just 4 years ago we were seemingly picking names out of the phonebook to pick out candidate and putting our candidate's name on the ballot without telling them. Now just 4 years later, we are making a serious effort in every race. We have candidates that people are excited about. Candidates that can raise money, and most importantly candidates that can articulate positions on issues that tell Nebraskans what we offer. No more standing up a straw-man in the corner and pummeling them for the Republicans. We have competitive races in our state and candidates that believe they can win. Thank God for Howard Dean. I'm not sure this would be happening without him.

13. Really the GOP deserves most of the credit
Democrats basically have had this opportunity handed to them by the obscene results of having the GOP in power. There is a very specifically anti-Republican sentiment out there that has nothing to do with whether people like the Democratic Party or not. It's an opportunity to build a lasting coalition rather than going back to 1994 and repeating the ugly scenario all over again.

We'll have to see. Once in power, will Democrats do the right thing? Or will they take the opportunity to feed at the trough?

14. Oh just wait till Gene Taylor or another conservative Democrat does something newsworthy and there
will be discussion of some of their positions and calls to kick them out of the party. Or people asking why a "real" Democrat didn't challenge them in their primary.
