2013? MAYBE?
Folks, John McCain just lost the general election:

http://apnews.myway.com/article/20080515/D90MB7CG0.html

Republican John McCain declared for the first time Thursday he believes the Iraq war can be won by 2013, although he rejected suggestions that his talk of a timetable put him on the same side as Democrats clamoring for full-scale troop withdrawals.

The Republican presidential contender, in a mystical speech that also envisioned Osama bin Laden dead or captured, and Americans with the choice of paying a simple flat tax or following their standard 1040 form, said only a small number of troops would remain in Iraq by the end of a prospective first term because al-Qaida will have been defeated and Iraq's government will be functioning on its own.

1. The war is over.
It was won in a matter of weeks in a remarkable display of efficiency by our military.

The occupation...not so good.

The reason politicians call the occupation a "war" is to rally support. Why do we let them get away with this?

2. Better is 'why DID we let them get away with this'
because they're being crushed under public pressure to withdraw troops right now (they're not 'getting away' with it). It's gotten so that even McCain has to spout platitudes about the potential for peace.

5. Think how much more opposition there would be...
...if the situation in Iraq was called (properly) an occupation. By casting it in terms of war, they can use the "we'll lose" card. No one wants to lose. Much tougher to get people into buying the idea that we'll "lose" an occupation.

Why any Democrat calls this a war at this point is beyond me...unless they *want* to keep our troops there indefinitely.

3. And We'll All Be Riding Ponies
Sounds like we're being set up for the Repugnican "secret plan". In October we'll hear Gramps has some big plan that will "win the war", but only if he's elected. There doesn't have to be any reality or fact involved here...he'll just say its all secret and only he can make it happen. The scary thought is how many voters will buy that shit.

What's amusing was reading some of the right wing angst in recent weeks...they're starting to realize they had it all and let it get away. They could have eliminated the IRS or any department...instead things were expanded. They got pwned. It's only now they're seeing how close they came and how its slipping away.
