Huckabee: ‘I apologize that my comments were offensive.’
Huckabee: ‘I apologize that my comments were offensive.’
Earlier today, while speaking at the NRA convention in Louisville, KY, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee made an offhand joke after being interrupted by an offstage nice. In his joke, Huckabee claimed that Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) “dove for the floor” when “somebody aimed a gun at him.” Huckabee has released a statement apologizing for the remark:

During my speech at the NRA a loud noise backstage, that sounded like a chair falling, distracted the crowd and interrupted my speech. I made an offhand remark that was in no way intended to offend or disparage Sen. Obama. I apologize that my comments were offensive, that was never my intention.

Obama was placed under secret service protection last year — the earliest ever for a U.S. presidential candidate — because of racially motivated threats.

3. "that my comments were offensive" not "if my comments offended anyone"
Funny that Huckabee didn't make the standard non-apology apology all other GOPers use.

6. It was a bit less deceptively constructed than the typical GOP mea culpa but...
...saying that it wasn't his intention to be offensive is still a lie.

7. He didn't take any responsibility
His "apology" is bogus. He's shifting it from the personal to the impersonal - he's not the subject, but his "remarks" are.

He should have said "I'm sorry I said what I said. It was offensive, mean-spirited, bigoted, and hateful. I regret so much what I have done, and I hope Senator Obama and the rest of the country can forgive me."

THAT would have been an apology. His statement is nothing more than the pathetic sniveling sounds made by a weasel.

11. Yup, them thar comments is to blame - they done it, not me
It's like he's apologizing for his dog having farted. Those comments just had a life of their own. They forced themselves upon poor ole Huck.

5. Hmmm...
Not apologize "if" but apologize "that". He admits his remarks were offensive and apologizes. Very strange coming from a puke.

9. "I apologize that my comments were offensive,
because I really wish no one had found them offensive."

That's what he wanted to say.

The new non-apology apology.

12. And the audience LAUGHED
That's what really got me. I expected the beat of silence to be followed by gasps. Instead -- laughter.

Not so long ago there was a sense of moral decency in this country. The Repubs have eaten away at that and made immorality the "Christian" thing, as long as it's directed at the enemy.

Thoroughly disgusted.

15. Edit: Sorry! You're absolutely right

I was going from memory of what I heard on Countdown, but I just viewed it again. Guess it enraged me so badly that I conflated the first round of laughter with the second which was more a tittering.

It's still angering, but at least the idiots in the crowd were in the minority.

14. What is scary...
some stupid Rube, who has had a steady diet of this shit, actually thinking this would be a good idea.

It is something a decent person would never joke about.
