Filmed in 2004-2005, this documentary tells the story of Bev Harris, a Seattle publicist/writer whose watchdog group uncovered evidence of mishandled voting records and suspicious voting machine malfunctions. Harris's crusade took the group--consisting of computer experts, activists and political candidates from both parties--from her home computer (where she found a computer system blueprint accidentally made public) to Tallahassee, FL, for a "mini-election" that proved just how easy it is to hack the vote. When I first start on DU during the 2004 election, I didn't know anything about her previous history (or the fact that she had been previously banned but allowed to return). I defended her on several occasions, until she showed her true colors.

For example, she successfully sued several electin commissions - and kept the money.

Our beloved Andy Stephenson (may he RIP), who was a true and tireless warrior for open and honest elections, workde for her for a while. She fired him under false circumstances and refused to pay him back salary, and then unfairly attacked him personally.

The organization she originally began www.blackboxvoting.com with realized what she was about and kicked her out, so she began www.blackboxvoting.org.

44. Andy was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. He had no health insurance

and was relying upon what Bev Harris owed him to help defray some of the medical costs. We at DU rallied around Andy and donated the money he needed for an operation, which he had at John Hopkins. There were a couple of wonderful DU members that held his hand throughout and took care of him at the hospital and post-op. Unfortunately pancreatic cancer has a high mortality rate and Andy was too far gone. He passed over a couple of months after surgery.

Andy was a wonderful person and he is sorely missed.

He worked for her and thought he had insurance. Then she fired him. He got sick and didn't have insurance. By the time he finally went to the doctor, he was in bad shape and couldn't afford the treatment he needed. DUers raised the money for an operation for him. I think it was like 3 or 4 days that they raised the money. (Sorry don't remember how much, maybe 40 or 50 thousand?) But he died just a couple months after the operation.

If he had had insurance when he first got sick and had gone to the doctor then, he would not have died as soon as he did. Plus the stress Bev put him through couldn't have helped.

It was so sad. I was relatively new to DU at the time and just read post after post about Bev and Andy and it was obvious right away that Bev was playing games. She had at least a dozen sock puppets here and probably still comes back to at least read posts. She also was posting on FR long before she came here and was a registered republican while she was trying to drum up support here. There were a bunch of threads about who Bev really was, and links to her FR posts.

Andy's death was horrible. But beyond that, Bev did damage to the election reform movement by being a fraud. That really pisses me off. She had the goods. And she played games. Without her games, we would be much further along than we are. Now we have an election coming up and still have the damn corrupt machines in too many states.

that is a term that comes from Free Republic, a political forum. Free Republic has had some outstanding discussions on voting machine integrity in the past. I have gotten some good consultation from "freepers."

We are nonpartisan. Everyone who's not a criminal wants clean elections. One of our board members, Jim March, has done some fantastic work on this issue, and I guess you'd describe him as a "freeper" -- he's a gun lobbyist who supports George Bush.

You may be very surprised at who's in our corner on this issue. In fact, George Bush ordered my book, had it overnighted.
