April 24th, 1939 - Cover of LIFE magazine...
Edited on Sun May-18-08 07:42 PM by kentuck
My wife and I went to the local flea market this morning to look for a birdcage. Of course, I'm always on the lookout for an Aria classical guitar or old antique radios and my wife loves to look for very old books and magazines - they sometimes have little treasures and notes hidden between the pages. Anyhow, she found a very interesting old LIFE magazine. On its cover was a large lifesize photo of Neville Chamberlain. Inside were editorial comments from about 10-12 editorial writers of the time, including Walter Lippman, Heywood Broun, Dorothy Thompson, and Walter Winchell. It was about the "great debate" going on in America about whether or not we should go to war? Between the photos of Katherine Hepburn and Betty Davis were reports and photos of Adolph Hitler on a cruise of some sort. There were ads for automobiles, including the new Studebaker, the new Hudson, and the new 1939 Olds, which was advertised as getting the best gas mileage. The most expensive automobile was $777.00 and the magazine cost 10cents. I thought it interesting because Mr. Chamberlain has been in the news in the last couple of days.. :-)

2. I can't believe someone would let that go...
...considering he's been in the news.

What a find.

3. old mags
especially late fifties when i started looking at them as a child, make me really nostalgic.

so many pics and ads back then were original artwork. always had a richer feel than our current computer generated graphics.

you cant go home again, I suppose....
