Mike Huckabee: Would like to be John McCain's running mate; apologizes for Obama remark

Staff
AP News

May 18, 2008 12:29 EST

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee said Sunday he'd like to be John McCain's running mate.

"There's no one I would rather be on a ticket with than John McCain," said Huckabee, who was a stronger than expected challenger against McCain for the Republican presidential nomination. "All during the campaign when I was his rival, not a running mate, there was no one who was more complimentary of him publicly and privately. ... I still wanted to win, but if I couldn't, John McCain was always the guy I would have supported and have now supported.

"But whether or not I do the best for him, that's something that only he can decide," Huckabee said on NBC's "Meet the Press."

Huckabee, an ordained Baptist minister who had strong support from religious conservatives, won the leadoff Iowa caucuses and seven other states. He left the race in March after Arizona Sen. McCain clinched the nomination following a series of big victories.

Huckabee also apologized again for remarks he made Friday to the National Rifle Association. Responding to an offstage noise during a speech, Huckabee said it was Democrat Barack Obama diving to the floor after someone had aimed a gun at him. Huckabee issued an apology Friday evening.

"It was a dumb, off-the-cuff remark," he said. "I apologized for it immediately. Anybody that knows me knows that I would never, ever try to inject something like that to create any dangerous moment for any candidate."

Huckabee added: "It wasn't the first dumb thing I've ever said. And ... it won't be the last dumb thing I've ever said."

4. A sane person would never have Huckabee as a veep nom, but alas, we are
dealing with John McCain.

If that turns out to be the GOP ticket, I think we defeat it.

But it's going to be ugly. Huckabee dredges up all the fundie nutbags.

27. you play their game, and cut your own throat
First, why do you believe libertarians are FREEPing fools? There are many members of the LP who are currently fighting against their party being seriously right-sided by clowns like Barr, and you would play the same game as Limbaugh? Do you believe you have a right to play dirty because you're a Democrat? Antinomianism is the word for the day. Look it up. I am assuming you know how to use a search engine.

Most of the members at DU, believe that Nader and The Greens cost Kerry the election in '04. You are all duped. Buchanan jacking the Reform Party had a much greater effect on the election that the Greens did. Buchanan played the good loyal Republican soldier, taking down the Reform Party, which had worked hard in the previous three elections, and qualified for FEC funds in 2004. Buchanan picked an insane woman for his VP, then proceeded to use the FEC money to campaign where it would do the most harm to the DNC, and avoided states where his campaigning would hurt Republicans. Buchanan punked y'all real good, and you still haven't even figured that out after four long years of BusHell.

Barr is backed by Richard Viguerie, a real piece of hate-breeding new-righty. Viguerie has in the past claimed to have jumped the GOP ship, only to return at a later date. It is exactly what he's doing again here. Barr is NOT a libertarian. He's even less a libertarian than Ron Paul, and I consider Paul's association to libertarianism to be personally defamatory. If you've noticed though, I've used lower-cap 'l' libertarian often. That is because I reregistered non-partisan in 2002, because the LP was completely out of line with their eminent domain whining in the face of the Bush Tyranny. Don't misunderstand, private property is an essential part of a truly free-society, but a people who are not in possession of habeas corpus, cannot even get out of the gate in the race to be free. In 2004, I campaigned hard for Kerry. Guaranteed I campaigned one hell of a lot harder for him than many of the limp-wristed hand-wringers who will read this post did. Clearly, there was a tremendous difference in candidates, and it truly did matter in 2004. I also had an ulterior motive. LtCmdr J Effin Kerry spoke for me in Congress back in 1971, as I was at that time, just finishing up my tour of duty in SE Asia, and that was one f**ked-up war, just as Iraq is.

There is currently a battle being waged in the LP. There are many who are vehemently opposed to Barr's candidacy, because he DOES NOT represent libertarians. Barr voted for The PATRIOT Act, before he was against it. He was a primary force in the Defense of Marriage Act. He was opposed to even medicinal marijuana laws, and still is a drug-war supporter at heart. Why would you support an arse like this? Are you so afraid of your own candidate's worthiness that you have to play the same games of divisive combativeness as your enemies?

This stupidity good easily backfire on you. First, there is no guarantee that Barr will not campaign like Buchanan did, and strategically target states where Democrats can be hurt by his campaign. Secondly, if Barr were to succeed in getting the nomination for the LP, there are many libertarians who would never vote for him, myself included. Libertarians still vote though, and which candidate do you think libertarians who are opposed to Bob Barr are most likely to vote for; McCain or Obama? Even the hard-right libertarian Justin Raimondo has clearly stated that Obama is the much better choice. If libertarians who oppose Barr believe that Democrats have played nasty, and enabled Barr to win the nomination, kiss that support good-bye. There are always other minor parties to waste a vote on in protest. There is significant libertarian support in some states that presently look key come November. I live in Nevada, and that is one of them. Why would you alienate potential supporters for your electoral choice just to play the same tawdry game as the Republicans?

Are you just trying once again to prove that The Democrats are The Lamer of Two Evils?

15. How sad is that??
Shouldn't these conversations be left in private? Perhaps McCain already laughed at the idea so now Huckabee has to resort to begging through the media so that his batsh*t crazy followers can put pressure on McCain to choose him as his running mate.

Pathetic.

And if McCain picks Huckleberry Hound as his running mate, I'm sure we'll all be
treated to many more dumb things from the Republican camp before this is all over.

But Huckabee can take heart--even if McCain doesn't pick him, the Republican side
will come out with enough dumb things to say even if he isn't the one saying them.
