At work today I was mocked for living close to work and able to walk. |
|
Well, wasn't that my choice, to live somewhat close to work?
I didn't mock her for living in another state and driving in all those miles. (Maybe I should have?)

2. Yeah you moran ya think you're smart saving all that money |
|
You should spend hours in your car and lots of $ buying 4 buck a gallon gas for it.
Or maybe you're some kind of commie.
Seriously, even if it is convenient, if your coworkers are that stoopid, maybe you should find another job.

And what is her problem?
Maybe she's jealous?

9 times out of 10 I try to take the high road. Good thing for prozac too, but that's beside the point... :7
Could be jealousy. But I always thought living closer to work was a logical thing to do. If managers needed help off hours, I'd be right there...

Just by living closer, I'm saving on all that gas and how I can walk everywhere in town.
I did respond that the way most people drive, to attempt walking would be rather dangerous...

Why do you mock someone? Given today's price of Gasoline the co-worker is feeling the pinch of high Gasoline prices and can NOT see a way out. You are a bad example for your co-workers, you show it can be done.

7. Isn't that like mocking you for dressing and bathing yourself? |
|
I mean, royalty and the very rich can hire people to do that for them, but us normal folks consider it a bit wasteful and silly.
So yes, perhaps you should have mocked her over her commute. Or at least the sort of thing she choses to mock someone about.
Or just give her the **eyes**

You save money, you're more physically fit, you don't pollute, and you get more time to live your own life when you're not stuck in traffic stressing out.

I think you're brilliant, and any sane person would say the same. To be able to walk to work, especially nowadays, is a wonderful luxury!

14. Everyone usually says cars are luxuries... |
|
:)
If anything, I should have bought a town home and walked an extra 0.62 miles per day...
Also, brilliance is relative. One might call a parrot stupid, but their ability to navigate and hunt delicious animals from afar far supersedes that of any human being. :)
Given how insanely fast our society has become, combined with the ubiquitous high fructose corn syrup, I think many kids are wrongfully diagnosed with ADHD too...

I am so totally envious...if I mocked you it would be out of jealousy. I live an hour and a half from work...it SUCKS. Walking to work probably isn't an option for me either, I couldn't stand to live in this God forsaken suburb. But walk to work...wow..you're LUCKY.

I walk to lunch a decent amount when I do go out, which is not that often, and have had people give me a funny look. It sucks too because the area where I work is about as pedestrian unfriendly as you can imagine. All of the intersections have "no pedestrian signs" and the closest cross walk is about a quarter mile out of the way - which if I am on "a walk" is not a big problem, but when I am just trying to get to the grocery store across the street and right back it's annoying.
Also, there are few sidewalks, and most are impractical and end abruptly. I hate suburbia and wish I could find a job closer to where I live.

20. No need to mock, just enjoy your blessings. |
|
I truly don't see what to mock here. As one who for a few years had an hour each way commute that sometimes stretched to more than an hour and a half, I think you can only have pity for your co-worker. Life is so much better without the commute.

22. Would really be jealous of us in Chapel Hill - walkable plus free buses |
|
We are striving for more people living and working in the same neighborhood. Still have many people communting from outside of town and they are really feeling the increase in gas prices.
It is possible to live in Chapel Hill without a car. Free buses for everyone makes it a lot easier.
I would normally say we are pedestrian friendly, but two pedestrians have been killed in town this past week. One was an exchange student from Scotland who stepped in front of a bus while jogging. Speculation is that she looked right when she should have looked left.
I am lucky and have made various decisions so that I drive less than 5 miles most days, 25 mile trip every week or two, and a long (>100 miles) trip every month or two. Walking and buses do the rest.

25. I'm sure s/he was just p*ssed at how much it cost to fill up her tank |
|
at the (recent) fill-up and it came out "inappropriately" to someone who 'already understands the game'.
Frankly, that happens a LOT here at DU too. People dissing other DU'ers who have 'figured some certain part of it" sooner than they did.
It's our We1rdo 'human nature'. Glad you took the "high road" (as someone upthread complimented you on ;-) )
Peace, M_Y_H

She probably makes just enough money to pay for a car and gas and some audio books. You work and don't have to spend money on all that stuff, sucker. You have to be burdened with all that money left over and nothing to spend on, plus, I'll bet you have to READ your books instead of listen to them.
I'm obviously having a hard time making fun of you. Please forward me her email, as I am not above taking the low road, and will gladly mock her til she shuts up.
PS I had a 4 cyl Honda before it got totaled in an accident. My friend sold me his V8 sports car very cheap so he could buy a more family friendly car. I was so happy I could finally drive a cool sports car til $4 a gallon came along. I miss my Honda.

You should be proud of yourself, for walking to work. If you can't stand up to that level of criticism that those judgmental people give you, then, I really don't understand where you are coming from.

31. Is it bad that I get the Dr Who reference? |
|
or am I just old? That aside if I lived in the same town as my job I guarantee you i'd be biking every day - VERY common here in Holland. Cars are expensive (taxes, insurance, gas) and generally a nice bike is around 2-300€ spendy I know. You can get an electric bike for 600-1500, or a broom fiets (motor bike) thats basically a heavy framed bike with a small 2 stroke motor for 3-800€
Then there are the scooters. The lil vespas everyone talks about, and the like. They're rather nice, a lil spendy but the insurance isn't that bad. The problem is that most kids get them at 16 and paint the roads. So my wife REFUSES to let me get one.
I'm a cheap bastard and bought a crap bike for 50€. it has one gear that works...it comes with 21 LOL (but that's another rant).
I get reimbursed for my travel expenses however, so my 310€ a month for a train pass is compensated, and the 40€ i pay for the bus every day (a kind of punch card) is also covered. My employed pays 355€ for travel expenses (its like 19c a KM, and I max out at over 50Km per direction)
BTW.... easy rebuttal... "So.. How much was it to fill your tank today?"
