Sharon Stone Calls Chinese Earthquake "Karma"

Posted May 26th 2008 2:06PM by TMZ Staff

http://www.tmz.com/2008/05/26/sharon-stone-calls-chinese-earthquake-karma/

When is a natural disaster a good thing? When the afflicted country commits human rights violations -- at least according to Sharon Stone.

Stone gave an interview while on the red carpet at Cannes this weekend in which -- after recounting all of China's atrocities -- she wondered, "All these earthquake and stuff happened and I thought, 'Is that karma?' When you are not nice that bad things happen to you." My name is Sharon!

Sharon went on to say she has come around and no longer thinks the death of over 60,000 people is cosmic payback. "Basic Instinct 2" is a whole other story.

8. She's done PLENTY for many charities. Does it occur to anyone to condemn the statement...
...and not go on a tirade about how worthless and irrelevant they are?

11. She's done a few things
<http://afp.google.com/article/ALeqM5ghzcDDf2UrD4Qxy4CJN1Rk_2dxPA>

A foolish comment in front of the camera, but if you listen to the entire video, the remark is not what it seems at first. She essentially says, I thought to myself, is the earthquake kharma for all the bad things that China has been doing, including to what she refers to her friend the Dalai Lama, and then reports that she received a letter from Tibetan representatives urging help for the Chinese, from which she learned a valuable lesson. That being said, I wish everyone (Sharon Stone, John Hagee, Pat Robertson, and other fundamentalist preachers, etc.) would stop ascribing tragedies to kharma/God/etc. as retribution for some perceived offensive behavior. Natural disasters are just that, natural--if you happen to be there when the earthquake, hurricane, or tornado hits, it's just bad luck.

25. Thanks for explaining further
it tempers my original response to her words. I admit, I wrongly didn't read her entire statement.

I also agree that people should stop ascribing tragedies to any of those things as it's ridiculous and insulting. I think I had such an initial negative reaction because of all those others you mentioned and their track record with these things as God's way to punish the sinful.

28. I think that's what she thought
and then realized it was wrong after the example set by the Tibetan representatives. If there is a God, I'm pretty sure he's not going to punish China's leaders by burying innocent peasants in tons of rubble.

2. I think she's ascribing too much divinity into a natural process of nature.
We know how earthquakes happen and where the fault lines are.

9. All these tornadoes?
That is so sick.

Glacial melt can affect earthquakes,
as can natural pressures and faultlines.

Global warming and changing weather
patterns can affect storms, tornadoes,
droughts, and floods.. which seem to
be increasing in size, intensity, and
frequency.

Human behavior can account for much of
this, especially the propensity to live
in dangerous areas and to change those
areas in ways that make storms and floods
more dangerous than ever.

4. So, does that extend to this country?
Hurricane Katrina, a myriad of tornadoes across the Midwest, we're expecting a frisky hurricane season this year . . .

Karma blowback on the U.S. too, Sharon?

had it coming. The fact that Beijing was not affected shows that God approves of Chinese government policy, however.

Suffice it to say that there were two magnetic females in that very small town in NW Pa. at the same time. Mine may not be quite as photogenic as "Sherry", but... :loveya:

23. China has done bad shit to the Tibetans....
but this is reminiscent of Jerry Falwell saying that 9-11 happened because of the rampant immorality in our country or Westboro Baptists blaming the death of our troops on homosexuality.

It's disgusting.

She should be ashamed.

29. It really hurts.
You think you know China well. But all you know is from your biased medium. Actually, Chinese government has been different from before. They concern the people the most. They do their best to protect the people from been hurt by riots launched by Dalai. Could you see the truth? You will never know a real China if you have been abandoned your bias.
