330,900 traumatic brain injuries in Iraq War veterans! NY Times
Here's a disturbing fact lost amid the Memorial Day weekend.

On May 25, the New York Times exposed that not only are there 900 “serious” traumatic brain injuries among our returning Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans, but an astounding 300,000 “milder” TBI cases that include disorientation, loss of conscienciousness and cognitive lapses!

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/05/25/magazine/25injuries-t.html?_r=1&scp=2&sq=traumatic+brain+injuries&st=nyt&oref=slogin

So for every soldier killed, 80 more have suffered brain injuries.

Pentagon lists of soldiers killed in Iraq and Afghanistan also do not include soldiers with other debilitating injuries, such as lost limbs, eyes, ears, or post-traumatic stress syndrome. Plus battlefield deaths don’t even count those who survived initial injuries, only to die later in hospitals or at home from injury-related complications. Nor have we even begun to tally health problems from exposure to depleted uranium and other poisons.

We are destroying a generation of young men and women.

It was known it would be thus well before this, but still, seeing the numbers displayed like this... abominable.

these numbers could be right... edit to change my post.

From Rand Corp. report:

...
Since October 2001, about 1.6 million U.S. troops have deployed to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, with many exposed to prolonged periods of combat-related stress or traumatic events. Early evidence suggests that the psychological toll of the deployments may be disproportionately high compared with physical injuries.

The RAND study also estimates that about 320,000 service members may have experienced a traumatic brain injury during deployment — the term used to describe a range of injuries from mild concussions to severe penetrating head wounds. Just 43 percent reported ever being evaluated by a physician for that injury.

While most civilian traumatic brain injuries are mild and do not lead to long-term impairments, the extent of impairments that service members experience and whether they require treatment is largely unknown, researchers said. In the absence of a medical examination and prognosis, however, service members may believe that their post-deployment difficulties are due to head injuries even when they are not.

5. Iraq War veterans return with lung disease, too: CBS reports
Edited on Mon May-26-08 07:11 PM by Liberty Belle
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/05/21/health/webmd/main4114714.shtml

(WebMD) ...A new study shows a large group of Iraq War veterans has been diagnosed with bronchiolitis, a type of lung disease that affects the small airways of the lung. It causes shortness of breath and/or rapid and labored breathing.

"All of the soldiers evaluated were physically fit at the time of deployment. On return, none of those diagnosed with bronchiolitis met physical training standards. In almost every case they were declared unfit for duty and were medically boarded with a service connected disability," says researcher Robert Miller, MD, assistant professor of pulmonary and critical care medicine at Vanderbilt University, in a news release.

Bronchiolitis is associated with many conditions, such as toxic inhalation, infection, and rheumatoid arthritis.

But researchers say these results suggest that exposure to toxins during the Iraq War may also need to be considered as a risk factor for unexplained breathing problems.

HOW MANY MORE LIES AND COVERUPS WILL WE TOLERATE BEFORE WE IMPEACH & ARREST THESE CRIMINALS FOR WAR CRIMES????????
