Gas vs. Food. Which should we buy?
Both are rising in price. I'm a college student so sometimes I gotta choose between driving and eating lunch. It's a dilemma! I've started walking everywhere even if it might take an hour to get there. Check out this funny article about how you can cut down on your gas and still get the precious food:

2. Bring your lunch to school!
A sandwich, some oreos and an apple and you are all set. And don't walk. Ride a bike!

I remember those college days when I was working at Mickey Dee's at night. After we closed, any food that was left over was counted and thrown out. It was a firing offence to be caught eating it.

But on more than one occasion, I grabbed a burger after it was thrown into the "waste bin" and scarfed it down.

It was the only food I got for the day...

(That was in 1977-78 when the country was in the throes of an earlier "gas crisis" and the price of everything (except wages) went up up up.)

5. The '70s were pretty rough
Heck, back then I had to walk 5 miles to the one-room schoolhouse uphill both ways in the snow!

7. Well, when there was money left over from my rent, et als, I would buy a loaf of
bread and a jar peanutbutter and jelly swirl.

Those days always make me remember "there but for the grace of..." when I see homeless people.

It isn't a bad thing to experience the dregs for a short time if you learn compassion for other from it.

Whatever you make for supper, make a bit more and eat it for lunch.

Potatoes, onions, a slice of cheese.

Buy cheap vitamins and take one a day also.

Noodles and a can of soup mixed together. Rice and a can of soup mixed together. Throw a handful of frozen veggies into the mix (better for you than canned and generally cheaper).

Walk when you can, always have some sort of food with you, even a slice of bread or a bagel.

Bagels don't squish like bread does when you stuff it in your daypack or pocket.

Give up mayo/mustard on sandwiches, and no margarine/butter either.

Meat is a condiment, not a course or a main dish.

Spices, herbs and/or sauces are your friends. Grow a windowpot of chives, rosemary, sage. Get clippings from someone to start chives, perhaps rosemary also as I think it roots when you put it in water.

Shop specials always, and always eat what's on sale. Lust after a particular type of food only when it is on sale. Look for marked down foods, don't be afraid to dumpster dive or ask for outdated produce "for your chickens/dog/gerbils" or "for my compost".

Don't buy prepared food as the service charges add up, carry food and water with you.

Take your vitamins.

Drink water, carry a nalgene or 2.

Visit friends for supper, or get invited to share someone else's food. You may have to be entertaining, or help with studying, but trading your mind for food can be possible.

Get a job working food service at the college. You can eat for free, and you can steal food to take home. Maybe it would be better to say: you can take home extra food that will be thrown out.
