RECOUNT/ Palm Beach County Voter Critique
I Just managed to cringe and watch the HBO special of Recount.

1st: The crowds, I assure you, were more numerous in our Palm Beach County protests than depicted in the film.

2nd: Little "Doe Eyed", Theresa LaPore, lost her appointment for Supervisor of Palm Beach County Elections Pronto in our next election cycle. There were many who thought her "Butterfly Ballot" was deliberate.

3rd: We were adamant that we knew how to vote and had there been a legitimate RECOUNT, Palm Beach County, WAS THE BASTIAN OF A DEMOCRATIC STRONGHOLD IN FLORIDA. (Most of us are transplanted New Yorkers.)

4th: We all called Kathrine Harris the WICKED WITCH OF THE WEST! You have to live here to realize that the East Coast of Florida is different than the West.

5th: Our local Wexler and Randi Rhodes became infamous from this conflict and fight on to this day.

I just wanted to set the record straight! Thank You For Listening.

1. I couldn't bring myself to do it
Given your "set the record straight" comments, I'm glad I didn't now. I was at the Courthouse a couple of days in a row and there were people there from the news and from both sides, with some Naderites thrown in for good chaos.

Sounds like their version was complete shit.

6. How do you figure?
The only substantive critique the OP made of the film was that the size of the crowds wasn't big enough.

It doesn't seem to me that that criticism raise to the level of making the whole thing "complete shit".

8. Maybe not
Maybe it's just my expectation of what they were going to present that prejudices my view of what he said. Given the other things he said, it SOUNDED to me as if he was trying to correct certain portions of the movie (hence, possibly criticizing the movie for certain things they got wrong).

And, if the OP WAS stating those things because they were not presented that way in the movie, then the movie was complete shit.

3. I wonder if we'll ever know the truth about Theresa LaPore?
Her explanation for the crazy ballot was just that----crazy. She ended up causing such mayhem!

4. Hi there
We were also here in Palm Beach County, spent some time protesting in front of the courthouse in West Palm, and I verify what you said. The crowds were plenty big enough. Theresa LaPore was an opportunistic wretch who was either woefully incompetent or more likely willfully malicious. Transplanted New Yorkers are not really the majority here, though it really does seem that way at times.

We are in Delray currently, lived in Boca in 2000. Welcome to DU fellow PBC'er!

9. Excellent analysis! I wanted to see more about the Caging Lists and KKKarl Rove's
inciting riots at many of the canvassing boards. There was some of that but it was glossed over. And Katherine "Cruella deVille" Harris was much more ruthless in real life than she was portrayed in the movie. I also remember than the Gore protestors were much more than depicted.

Finally, I had forgotten about the role that "Traitor Joe" LIEberman played in having the military vote counted.

Had the Gore team fought to have to entire state recounted, perhaps the outcome would have been different. On the other hand the SCOTUS would have still found a way to give the election to Dumbya.

10. Oh I remember the great fight you all put up... and my hero was county commissioner CAROL ROBERTS!
Edited on Mon May-26-08 09:58 PM by eowyn_of_rohan
In fact I wrote a letter to the Palm Beach Post and told them so and they printed it!

Wearing a tiny butterfly pin to mock the infamous ballot, (Carol Roberts) faced the cameras and vowed to count every last vote. Why wait for court approval? Why should the battle for the Constitution wait for a judge? "What happens? Do we go to jail?" she asked the lawyer for the board of canvassers. "Because I'm ready to go to jail."

And when she said that the crowd of protesters ROARED! And we did too, way up in Madison, Wisconsin.

12. It was all the MSM jokes about people not being able to figure out the butterfly ballot ...
Edited on Mon May-26-08 10:09 PM by eowyn_of_rohan
that got it started and the reptilicons and MSM took it to the next level... Palm Beach County put up a good fight. That teresa LePore - registered as a Dem since the county election board needed equal #s of Dems and Rep.s, but was in reality she was a repub. Interestingly, she was also a private stewardess for a Saudi businessman before she joined the Palm Beach election commission and invented the infamous butterfly ballot...

16. In 2000, my senior citizen Jewish parents who were lifelong Democrats voted in Palm Beach County.
Edited on Tue May-27-08 09:47 AM by OmmmSweetOmmm
My mother to her horror, confused by the butterfly ballot voted for Buchanan. My dad, because he had a vision problem, was assisted by someone at the polling place, and luckily placed his vote for Gore.

Before his death 2 years ago at the age of 88, my Dad never lost the opportunity to tell me that George Bush was the worst President in his lifetime. My Mom feels the same exact way.

BTW...my parents transplanted to West Palm Beach from NY too.

Welcome to DU!!!!! :hi:

18. At least the woman who played Kathrine Harris
seemed spot on from what i had seen on TV back then. It was a little eerie.
