US Airways to cut free snacks on domestic routes

http://www.cnn.com/2008/TRAVEL/05/28/usairways.snacks.ap/index.html

TEMPE, Arizona (AP) -- Fliers, let go of the pretzels and peanuts.

In what could be the ultimate cost-cutting move by airlines buffeted by sky-high fuel prices, US Airways Group says it will eliminate free snacks in coach class on all its domestic flights starting June 1. The airline's largest hub is in Charlotte, North Carolina.

US Airways also says it has matched last week's fare hikes by United Airlines, AMR Corp.'s American Airlines and Delta Air Lines Inc. The increases are from $10 to $60 per round trip and vary based on the length of the flight.

US Airways spokesman Morgan Durrant says the move to cut free snacks was needed to save money in a time of extremely high fuel costs. The price of jet fuel has soared this year with crude oil prices in the $130-per-barrel range.

The airline is still providing complimentary soft drinks.

8. Might I suggest folks bring along some saltines and vienna sausages
for a snack? On the Spam thread the talk turned to those tasty little treats.

15. TSA will discover that you can make bombs out of Vienna sausages so...
you'll have to buy them for $10 from the cartel concessionaire after passing security.

21. It's not the Vienna sausages themselves that are the problem...
They're packed in a "mystery liquid" but not in a see-thru container.

Thank Reagan.

No wonder there is zero service.

19. Actually, de-reg happened under Jimmy Carter. Sorry!
This issue has nothing to do with de-reg. It has everything to do with $135+/bbl oil.

Disclaimer: I am a US Airways captain (still on the seniority list). However, I am on long-term-disability, and have been since 9/10/2001.

22. Carter was horrible on deregulation; Reagan received Teamster's endorsement
Edited on Wed May-28-08 08:24 PM by fed_up_mother
Carter worked to deregulate transportation, oil, and telecommunications, and gave greater power to the Federal Reserve System.

Funny, how we remember what we want to remember.

People need to go back and study Carter's policies. He was no liberal savior that's for sure. People blame Clinton for his center policies, but Carter was not only worse, he was stupidly ineffective at just about anything else he tried.

Although he did manage to give away the Panama Canal. :) Clinton was ten times the president he was.

16. Great idea!
I was thinking of stinky and/or obnoxious food, and you beat me to it.

Even peanuts with shells on, are enough to annoy. And you can carry them in your pocket.

14. Makes me wonder who had the contract providing those pathetic snacks.
How much did they charge the airlines for those few peanuts or pretzels?

17. I flew US airways on Thursday.
The attendants on the seattle-phoenix flight were rude as can be and the toilet was backed up and stank to high heaven. Sitting in the last row was unpleasant. A bag of six micro-pretzels didn't mitigate it.

On the subsequent commuter flight from Phoenix (also US air) we were sitting in the front row of a dash-8 and the attendant was sitting in her jumpseat facing us. So, you're kind of forced to make conversation (not that I minded, she was really quite attractive) She had very little good to say about her employer and was obviously really frustrated by them. Her take was that they're going too far with their cost cutting. "Why should it be cheaper to fly than to drive?" I had to agree. I find it reasonable that I'd pay more now that fuel has doubled in price.

Just send those TSA assholes to the 7-11 to fetch some peanuts. That's all I ask.

18. Frontier airlines has done it too.
In January, they had pretzels. In May, they were selling stuff for $3.50. They still provide beverages, and we brought granola bars with us and were just fine. My snacks beat what they have to offer any day. The only bad thing is when you don't know they have nothing and you brought nothing.

20. Take the train
I usually carry aboard Two bottles of fine wine and a six-pack of good beer. Couple that with high-quality cheese, fresh French bread, fruit and veggies, with occasional recourse to hot meal via dining car while sitting back and letting the amazing scenery of America pass by. Flight is highly overrated, just allow more time to travel and relax....
