"A 79-year-old man arrested at a Publix and jailed 10 hours for a $5.29 pie."

Talk about mean-spirited! Even if the dude were a repeat offender, I can think of a brazillion ways to confront the situation with him, the last of which (and the scummiest) was the course they chose to take.

1. I just saw that article too and was angry
There was a million ways they could have handled this.

Thanks for posting the contact information. They will be hearing from me today.

2. sounds like they were following him just waiting for him to exit the store
that is low. They certainly should have rectified it before he left.

3. I have never forgiven Publix for their support of the right-wing in Florida
I do not remember the event - but Publix was right there contributing water and other food to some right-wing protesters.

4. That's what I call customer service...
I guess it's back to Kroger for a while (just for the small things)
We do our main shopping between Aldi and Trader Joe's

5. Publix=flytrap
I avoided Publix the entire time I lived in Boca Raton, FL. The first day we arrived my gal said: "Hey, convenient! There's a supermarket just up the road!" We went in that evening to pick up some food, and inside it was the most unsanitary, fruit-fly-infested food store I had ever entered.

Later I heard about their politics, and then I had reason to never go back!

6. They let him slide other times and he pushed his luck.

he forgot the apple pie was in the rear basket of his electric scooter, underneath other things. He notes the Publix cashier who bagged his $20 worth of other groceries and placed them in his scooter that April day failed to notice it as well.

The pie was concealed. That sounds like a conscious effort to me. Why else would the pie be under non-grocery items? The cashier didn't see it because it was hidden.

"They're making a federal case out of it,"

He's minimizing his crime.

He's a repeat offender getting in trouble for the first time.

Sounds to me like Publix was more than generous.

"It should be an embarrassment to them because I'm a senior citizen and an honorable man and I've never been in prison in my life," he said.

I believe HE should be embarrassed instead of indignant.
