Susan Sarandan will move to Italy or Canada if McCain is elected. |
|
"SUSAN SARANDON, who appeared in three films last year and won kudos for her TV movie "Bernard and Doris," is still not a contented soul. She says if John McCain gets elected, she will move to Italy or Canada. She adds, "It's a critical time, but I have faith in the American people."" from http://www.nypost.com/seven/05292008/gossip/liz/pollack_was_loved_112946.htm?page=2

|
Edited on Sat May-31-08 12:31 AM by gbrooks
The Communists were the only party that put up a fight against Mussolini. The Catholic Church endorsed him as they did Franco in Spain and still do in opposition to Zapetaro's government.
Read Gramsci's Prison Notes and then get back to me.
You might also want to read Marx's Economic and Philosophical Manuscripts of 1844.
As a rule I discount anything Americans say about Communism because Americans are historically and philosophically illiterate.

|
When my SO visited Milan in the mid nineties they had 17 daily newspapers devoted to various political parties and causes.
In North America you're lucky if their are two dailies in your city. If you live in Canada there is a good chance either Southam or Black owns both of them plus all the community news weeklies. That is the situation in Vancouver which is why I refuse to read our local papers.

and a lot of political power in Canada rests with the individual provinces. She could choose one of the more left-wing provinces.
Italy is a volatile country and might change by November of course; but at the moment, they've got a VERY right-wing crook in charge, and the mayor of Rome is essentially neo-fascist.

111. But they ARE a minority party in Canada and have to "deal" to do legislation, etc.... |
|
Was asking locals here while visiting in Vancouver this week, and they note that unlike our two party system, places like Canada need to cut deals to form coalitions to stay in power. So the conservatives in Canada aren't nearly as brazen in their power mongering as they are in the U.S.
I find it interesting in a number of the TV channels here in the hotel that one would NEVER find in a hotel in the U.S. (BBC 24 hour news and their independent channel that shows CKNW and other very radical programming like speakers talking about Bush crimes, etc.).
We live in such a sheltered environment in the U.S.!

without a specific job waiting for you OR you have enough money to support yourself OR you can get some citizen of that country to marry you?
Sad to say, you can't just up and move to Europe unless you have a job, an independent income, or a Significant Other from the EU.
If you're young, say under 40, you have a chance to emigrate to Canada or Australia, especially if you have skills that their economies need.

to say they would leave the country if McCain wins. It fires up the oppositions base. Case in point, in the 2000 election, I can't remember which poll that was, but to my best memory a good 16% of people who voted for Bush did it to chase Alec Baldwin out of the country. Might not be much, but it was a generous percentage in itself.

I used the word liberal here because conservative celebrities don't make that threat. But you've pricked my conscience and now that I've read it again, that phrase was probably a poor choice - it sounds freeperish - YIKES!

i can't see anyone as wealthy as her needing to move. There doesn't seem to be much pressure on the wealthy in the States. You can buy your way out of anything.
Maybe she just doesn't like the association that goes along with living here? I can certainly agree with that:(

I heard the tapes of how he talked to his 11-year old daughter..he's a moron. NMot for what he said, but for voluntarily recording it! if she was as bad a kid as he said she was, then he shoudl have know she would send it straight to the media!..voila, Alec is as dumb as his youngest brother seems to be!

Then went through a SHITLOAD of trouble trying to stay with my British boyfriend, who I refused to marry because I was only 22 at the time (and thank GOD - he turned out to be an asshole later). We finally got a domestic partnership visa for me, but had to prove we'd been living together as if we were married (producing joint account statements, bills, etc.), then two years later do that again, for a total of four years, before I was allowed residency. Meanwhile, it's nigh impossible to get a "real" job because, who wants to hire someone on a temporary visa?
You have to go as a student, marry someone, or be in a VERY high demand job, like possibly nursing. Edited to add: even if you're married, it can take up to 2-3 years to get your marriage visa approved, meanwhile, you can't work.
It's DIFFICULT.

It was made in the early 1970s or late 1960s. Young Susan Sarandon and (also young) Peter Boyle played characters on opposite ends of the political spectrum. I recommend it, if you haven't seen it. http://www.amazon.com/Joe-Peter-Boyle/dp/B00005V9HL

Why do fucking rich, famous people get to live where ever the hell the want to? And those of us who are desperate to get out can't? Because we are just ordinary folks with nothing special to offer some other country?

...as a political person she should know that you stay and fight for your ideals and principles regardless of circumstances or the odds against you. Saying that she'll leave the country if McCain is president is both childish and selfish.

112. Seems to me its childish and foolish to deny the path the nation is (and would be taking) |
|
Many wise people left various countries in the 20th century because they had the foresight NOT to be swayed by foolish emotional arguments such as this.
People who have the means AND the courage to recognize what's been happening in the states and leave that behind in order to seek a rational life in another country should be applauded, IMHO.
It's not an easy thing to do.

113. As long as she stays gone, fine |
|
"Screw this, I'm leaving" is a childish argument, especially for someone who is filthy rich and who can't relate to what marginalized people have to go through.
I don't really care how liberal she is. Look at her passport: I'm willing to bet it has stamps from scores of different countries that she can afford to visit any time it strikes her fancy. If her day-to-day existence is that fungible across nations, then by definition she can't truly relate to people who stay here not because they HAVE to, or because they WANT to, but because they can't possibly conceive of living anywhere else.
"I have faith in the American people." What an elitist sack of shit thing to say. I'm sure we'll all band together to justify her confidence in the little people, so she can have a sumptuous life HERE instead of in Italy or Canada.
