PEARL, Miss. -- An Iraq war veteran said that he fought for his country and now the government is letting him down. snip
It took nearly two years for the Department of Veteran Affairs to decide on disability benefits for Fortunato.
A letter sent to Fortunato said the VA sent him a letter that explained that it was determined that he had a disability impairment of 10 percent. He will receive a one-time back disability payment for the 22 months he waited for the decision, which totals $6,848. Then he will receive $117 a month for the rest of his life, unless his condition gets worse.
"That won’t even buy you food for a month," Fortunato said. "Without family I would have been on the street like countless other vets that are homeless." snip
Despite what he calls a slap in the face from the VA, Fortunato said he doesn't regret serving his country. In fact, he said if he could he would return to Iraq.
"I'm not afraid, and I never was," Fortunato said. "I'm proud to be an American."
