4. Never lived or been abroad
Trips out of the country are rather expensive, and actually I've looked at the immigration policies of a lot of countries and I don't think I have the resources to qualify.

9. In France and Spain as a teenager, in Germany (sorta) now
I'm still legally a resident of Texas, but I'm abroad so much,
I see my wife just as much with her sticking in Germany (she is
German, and does not want to leave) as I would if she were to move
to Dallas, which she never will (would consider New England), so
you could just as well say I live in Germany. More accurate would
be to say that I live in rooms with no windows and airports :-(

10. For the last 8 years
it has certainly seemed like it. Of course, it kinda felt that way during the Reagan-Bush years, too.

No offense intended to those who have truly lived abroad.

17. Can we switch?
I was involuntarily repatriated to Texas in 2005 after four years in the UK. I prefer it there, in a lot of ways.

:hi:

22. York, then Essex
Brentwood, then Willingale, near Ongar/Chelmsford

Loved the UK, hated my partner. Who broke up with me while I was in the US visiting family for the first time in two years, couriered my belongings to me in nine boxes, and told me to look for a job - six months before I would've gotten indefinite leave to remain. That's the short version.

I still miss it, but I love Texas, too.

18. Spain two years
Portugal six months, the former Yugoslavia a year.

Odd the things you miss about this country. Supermarkets, toilet paper, and reliable plumbing were the chief ones (I'm obviously spoiled). The political and social life not so much. I actually find Europeans make much better neighbors than Americans. They make a hell of a lot more noise - at least in Southern Europe - but they're also friendlier and more considerate when it counts.

21. Yes, I've Lived Abroad, And So, Thankfully, Has Barack Obama.
Edited on Wed Jun-04-08 11:18 AM by justinaforjustice
Obama will be a godsend for the U.S.'s reputation in the world: the product of a Kansas mother and an African father, whose step-father was Indonesian, Obama may be the most intelligent, culturally sensitive person to ever run for U.S.President.

I am living in Venezuela now, where President Hugo Chavez is, like Obama, incredibly intelligent and well-read. He is also very culturally sensitive, coming from a racially mixed family. He is part indigene. Chavez and his government have brought massive improvement to the lives of millions of Venezuelans.

Both Obama and Chavez share a deep commitment to eradicating racism and poverty. A meeting between those two leaders might lead to enormous changes in all of the Americas.

Having previously lived in Papua New Guinea and Cambodia, I can attest that human beings of whatever race and color share the same dreams and aspirations for themselves and their children. Our commonality is much, much more significant than our differences.

Most Americans are unaware of how big an impact U.S. politics has on other nations and on the lives of billions who cannot vote in our elections. Today the world has hope that the U.S. will return to its ideals of freedom, equality and progress for all people after 8 years of bringing only devastation and sorrow to the world.

I look forward to seeing Obama, Chavez and other progressive leaders help to end our human pre-history of war and poverty and to unleash the productive and creative passions of all the world's peoples.
