Last time it looked like this 22 people died
http://www.kansas.com/690/story/424100.html

Thursday could bring a tornado outbreak to the Great Plains, according to local meteorologists who are warning residents to pay attention to the weather.

Computer forecasting models for the day bear striking similarities to the conditions present on June 8, 1974, when 39 tornadoes touched down in the southern Plains and killed 22 people -- including six in Emporia.

"I think this event warrants more advance warning," said Robb Lawson, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Wichita.

This is an addendum to my earlier post...

3. Pictorially, here is why (the "dry lines" tornado chasers look for) ..
Edited on Wed Jun-04-08 08:19 PM by DemoTex

Dry line into a low which anchors a cold front to the south an occluded front to the east. Not good. I'd like to see the Skew-T Log-P chart.

For tommorow:

http://www.intellicast.com/National/Weather.aspx

1. Look at CURRENT

2. Look at RADAR

Look at RADAR SUMMARY (click on area for closer view)*

3. Look at SURFACE (click for 12-hour forecast)

* RADAR SUMMARY will show the cell tops in 100-ft increments (ie, 250 = 25,000' .. the higher the worser!), and tornadic indicators like TVS (tornadic velocity signature), and MESO (Meso-cyclonic activity) ..

All the "keep safe" platitudes are fine and dandy, but they don't help you to keep safe.

Know what I mean, Vern?

13. If you are asking me, yes. All three.
I have a very secure finished basement, an earth-bermed wine cellar, and two deeper (but harder-to-get-to) reinforced "bomb shelters" (from the 50s). I laughed at the real estate agent that suggested that when we first looked! You would not believe what is on the basement/cellar/laundry floor of this wonderful house!

5. Still ongoing here in the DC area, though the storms have moved off to the east.
However, we've had doppler radar for a few years now, and I've never, ever, seen the number of rotations I saw today.

I was watching one overhead (outside, looking up at the clouds) when the furniture - all the furniture - from a large condo complex across the street went flying off the roof-top deck. I managed to run back inside, close and lock the door before we got hit with a huge wind gust.

I like a heavy thunderstorm as much as anyone could, but I've never had to run from one before.

7. I read a bit ago another (Parkersburg? ville? town?) woman died today from tornado injuries.
Stay low all, keep your eyes peeled, take care.
