A Democratic Administration - ripples beyond the Presidency.
Edited on Fri Jun-06-08 02:52 PM by pinto
I saw a post recently, can't recall which member made it, but I'd like to reiterate the point -

A Democratic Administration means more than the Presidency. It means a renewal across the Federal Departments controlled by the Executive.

Bushco has been a disaster of epic proportions in that arena. While change may come more slowly there, in the bureaucratic scheme of things, this is our chance to reshape them all in the interests of all Americans.

FDR, turning compromise to fruition, JFK, using inspiration as a political metaphor, and LBJ, managing legislative politics to pursue a domestic agenda - all led some broad, bureaucratic changes that went beyond their Presidencies.

We have the opportunity to support that kind of change again.

1. I like the fact that you stated All Americans
if we fail to do so than we will sow the seeds of our own future defeat.

The public really does seek some fundamental change in a number of different areas, and they are mighty tired of partisanship (even if more than a few on DU are not).

We will win to some degree not because the public loves us so much, but more so that because they are so sick and tired of what they have been offered the last 8 years, and how it has been totally screwed completely up.

We offer an attractive and articulate candidate who seems to have his finger on the pulse on the nations mood better than anyone since Reagan (yeah I know evil incarnate etc, but he did manage to mangle Carter and you have to take that into consideration) and John Kennedy.

we win then the challenge is to govern, we must be up to that challenge as FDR was.:dem:

2. Coulda been me
I've been posting the following list for months. It's more than the White House. It's more than the Supreme Court. It's damn near EVERY INSTITUTIONAL check on a corporate takeover of our country.

the President appoints

... Cabinet Secretaries for the following Executive Branch departments

Department of Agriculture
Department of Commerce
Department of Defense
Department of Education
Department of Energy
Department of Health & Human Services
Department of Homeland Security
Department of Housing & Urban Development
Department of Justice
Department of Labor
Department of State
Department of The Interior
Department of Transportation
Department of Veterans Affairs
Department of the Treasury

... candidates for the following Judicial Branch positions

Court of Appeals for Veterans' Claims
Federal Judicial Center
Superior Court Judges
U.S. Circuit Court Judges
U.S. Claims Court Judges
U.S. Court of International Trade Judges
U.S. District Court Judges
U.S. Supreme Court Judges
Territorial Courts
Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces
U.S. Court of Federal Claims
U.S. Court of International Trade
U.S. Supreme Court
U.S. Tax Court
United States Bankruptcy Courts
United States Courts of Appeals
United States District Courts
United States Sentencing Commission

... the heads of the following Regulatory Agencies

Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service
Consumer Product Safety Commission
Drug Enforcement Administration
Employee Benefits Security Administration
Environmental Protection Agency
Equal Employment Opportunity Commission
Federal Communications Commission
Federal Election Commission
Federal Emergency Management Agency
Federal Energy Regulatory Commission
Federal Labor Relations Authority
Federal Trade Commission
Food & Drug Administration
Occupational Health & Safety Administration
Securities & Exchange Commission
(just to name a few--there are way more "smaller" agencies that still have a big impact in the areas they regulate)

None of us who love this country can afford to flounce off in a snit if your preferred candidate didn't get the nomination.

3. excellent reminder
Thanks for reminding us.

I think the lower federal courts are extremely important. Despite nominating a whole host of radicals, Bush has had his way on virtually all of his appointments to the federal judiciary. Bill Clinton's selections were far more moderate, but the Republics still pushed back or delayed on a ton of them.

As of 2006, every federal court save Bill O'Reilly's whipping boy - the 9th circuit - was made up of a majority of Republic appointees. That spells a lot of long-term trouble over the next 10-20 years.

4. That particular 'change' may actually be far faster than the national ego.
Edited on Fri Jun-06-08 03:50 PM by sicksicksick_N_tired
I am always amazed at those who criticize those employed in the public service sector,...ALWAYS. Public employees' dedication to something greater than themselves is CLEAR because they do not make the money they "could" in the private sector. The only ones who USE a public service job to benefit themselves are the ones "appointed" to their positions.

I imagine the suffering of all those having to swallow the last seven years, continually stating to themselves, "this is temporary". Imagine the relief to actually get back to SERVING THIS COUNTRY rather than serving the BUSINESS of a profiteering/power-mongering administration!!!! It's GOT to feel like a,...."FREE,...FREE AT LAST,..." to do what all these people intended to do when enrolling in public service.

They finally get to fulfill their purpose: serve something greater than themselves,...the best interests of our people!

You are correct!

However, my guess is,...the turnover of the adherents to this administration,...will be swift!
