"Rock stars" have no substance.
DUer Median Democrat posted about a Newsweek article
MSNBC/Newsweek - Slanted Article Suggests McCain Is Not An Image Candidate.

So, I'm reading it and on the second page there is a "subtitle" How to Beat a Rock Star: ‘Substance.’

WTF!?

I'm guessing "no substance" must be the new GOP insult meme.

But, I'm not having any of it. Since when do rock stars not have substance?

Apparently, the GOP have never heard of Bob Dylan or Elton John or Bruce Springsteen.

What rock stars would you hold up to the GOP as having substance?

...which is what I believe the GOP are targeting as being "unsubstantial".

And thank you for posting your pick for rock star.

14. I think the author (of the Newsweek piece) is trying to imply...
...is that the ability to influence a large number of people (like Obama) has less value than the ability to put large numbers of people to sleep (like McCain).

Any time someone writes some knee-jerk, half-assed, Hollywood-bashing article like that I see it immediately as a not-so-veiled attempt to promote their anti-youth agenda in favor of artless, unimaginative corporate crap.

Like McCain.

Did Reagan's handlers and followers EVER listen to more than the chorus of that song?

20. It's code.
It's a way for the GOP-controlled media to bash Hollywood, young people and any candidate they would support.

The use of the term "rock stars" is meant to conjure up images of The Beatles and the screaming fans.

And to make people think of pied pipers luring children to damnation with their "substanceless" loud music.

23. I was reading a thread on FR yesterday about how Obama has too much substance
I shit you not. The troglodytes in the thread were complaining that Obama has 30 'issues' listed on his site, while McCain has only a respectable 12. Besides whining about how this shows that he's a big-government librul, they derided his concern for things like increasing penalties for child and spousal abuse. These folks are actually against increasing the powers of law enforcement when a liberal advocates it.

Some of these people are such dead-enders that absolutely nothing will persuade them to change their minds.

24. How frightening.
Paradoxically, what you've mentioned (he has too much substance) is not contrary to what I suspect the Newsweek story was hinting at (he has no substance).

In other words, Obama is both too substantial and substanceless.

This thinking is the basis of GOP ideology.

Because of his education, he has too much substance, which is bad because libruls use thinking when solving problems instead of faith (or gut).

And it is this lack of faith that makes him substanceless, because he is a Muslim. Or a Secret Muslim.

And a Secret Quaker as well.

Do I really have to post this :sarcasm: ?
