IOWA--Another Katrina?
by hannah

Darrell in Iowa writes:

I am in Mason City. Our levees broke Sunday morning. Flood stage is 7 foot and waters are now at 19 feet. Hundreds of homes and businesses are underwater. The City's water plant was flooded and the entire city of 30,000 is without potable water. A couple of hours ago the main electric substation flooded and failed and much of the city is without power. People remain in flooded homes. Early tonight I saw people wandering the streets not knowing where to go. There are entrie areas of the city with NO emergency personnel on hand.

NOBODY from the outside has come to help. Our local first responders are exhausted and overwhelmed. Small rural towns downstream tonight are being devasted. Levees everywhere are failing. Calls for help in these small towns have been unmet. Portions of our local guard are in Iraq.

The homeland has been left unprotected and people are suffering horribly.

And more of the story:

June 7, 2008 - Saturday

The Dike broke and flooding is Horrible

A quick post to let everyone know we are safe. I am at my parents house in Mason City, Iowa. The flooding rivers have now past a 75 year old record and will crest several feet higher later tonight. A few hours ago the dike on the main river broke. The City water plant is under water and soon this city of 30,000 people will be without drinking water. By this afternoon the last remaining bridge to the area we are in will be under water stranding about 10,000 people. We are high enough we won't flood although we will be cut off. I have the boat standing by in the back yard in case we need it. More later as I have time...need to see what I can do to help friends whose houses are under water.

Oh damn, thought the rain had stopped but it is starting again.

1:40 pm update....The rain continues to fall heavily and waters are rising fast again. The flood stage on the main river is 7 feet. We are now at 18 feeting and rising. The City is telling people we will be without water for at least two days and possibly all week. There must now be concern about contamination because people are being told not to use city water supply. I made it to the store before the bridge was closed and a semi load of water had just come in...as fast as it could be unloaded people were grabbing it. Its like chaos at the grocery stores. We are being told to expect much worse. I am in my RV, but need to soon abandon it. The water is about a foot deep around it and thats just urban flooding...its nowhere near a river.

10:00 pm update - I just got back a half hour ago from my brothers business where they are sand bagging. The rain has finally stopped and although on TV they report water is not longer rising...that's not what is happening. The street I took two hours to get out of our neighborhood is now under water. I was one of the last vehicles to get through the bumper deep water before it was closed. We are now completely isolated and cut off from the rest of the City.

Meanwhile---

State of Emergency - Disaster Declaration

A state of Emergency has been declared and the area will be declared a Disaster Area. The water levels are reported to be stable on the news, but I can tell you thats not the case where we are. They are still rising. Here's a list of what we are hearing on the radio and some local facts.

Mason City, Iowa is a city of about 30,000 people. Two Rivers converge in downtown Mason City. Mason City is located 25 miles south of the Minnesota/Iowa border near Interstate 35.
We have had over six inches of rain in the last 24 hours and over ten inches in the last three days.
A curfew is in effect and all businesses are closed.
Hundreds of houses and businesses are under water.
A third of the City is totally cut off and isolated by flood waters. I am in that area.
The Mason City water plant has been inundated and now the water is unsafe to drink and use for the entire City.
Large areas are being evacuated and City transit buses are taking people ten miles west to Clear Lake, Iowa where evacuation centers are set up.
Porta Potties are being set up around the city tonight because the sewer system is also failing and all 30,000 residents are being told not to use toilets etc. We still have water pressure because the water towers are not yet empty but unsure how long that will last. The City has a 5 million gallon underground water storage facility but that area is entirely underwater and they fear the entire water system is contaminated.
.....

I have seen no evidence of any kind of effort to check houses and check on persons welfare. The only emergency people here are the local authorities. NOBODY from outside has come to help.

While walking around near the downtown area I came across a young guy around 20 years old carrying several bags and packs. He approached me telling me that he was told to evacuate and they had given him only one days worth of meds. He obviously was mentally ill and probably taking psychotropic medications. He told me a bus was supposed to get him but he didn't know where it was. Nearby was a mental residential care facility that was partially surrounded by water. I asked him if that was where he lived. He told me yes and I took him back. I left him with another resident. There were no responsible parties or emergency people anywhere in the vicinity. It angers me that whatever person that runs/owns that facility wasn't better taking care of these people. I know its a private care facility.

You would think our government would have learned after Katrina. Where in the hell is FEMA? There are 30,000 people here without water. There are still people in flooded homes. People are wandering the streets not knowing what to do and where to go.

12:30 am update - An hour ago the main electrical power substation serving downtown Mason City was flooded and has failed. The entire central part of the city is in the dark where the flooding is the worst. More then 2,000 homes are now without power. There are no expectations that power will be restored until sometime tomorrow.

Just one thought. The reason we organize ourselves into communities is to deal with the vagaries of man and nature we can't effectively handle by ourselves. There are those who believe that natural disasters are an expression of God's will. But, when that's the attitude of men who have been appointed and paid to organize and deliver an appropriate response and compound the disaster by failing to show up, that's a crime of the highest order.

Where is FEMA?

5. I am a proud Iowan
And I am reasonably sure that the people in our great state will pull together to help these people out. Governor Culver will dispatch the National Guard asap and if he hasn't visited yet, he soon will. And it won't be some photo op like the "leader" of our country did either. He will get help there. But keep in mind that Culver is a Democrat and FEMA is run by the feds. Just sayin'.

17. I believe we do
Mason City is nowhere near as large as New Orleans. And I wouldn't be surprised if the Minnesota NG came in to help too. Mason City is near the border. And as far as hope, I am an Iowan as I said, and I know that we help each other out. I've seen it many many times. I live in the city that had the worst Mississippi River flood ever in 1993. We had lots of help from all over.

thing since it appears once more that the government which is supposed to act for all of us is not going to help anyone yet again.

12. That is a huge thing to keep in mind
that is what hampered Blanco and the other dems in Louisiana.

Send energies to him that if FEMA doesn't reach back he needs to call the campaigns, get the candidates to take up his cause and get the attention he needs.

God be with these folks, they are all in my prayers and if they aren't spiritual they should know that I am wishing them well and going to donate to a group that will actually help them out once I figure out how to do that and which group.

We can't all go there to help, but we expect the best uses of resources and taxes to fix this.

I send a prayer and my thoughts to you.

When I hear someone say that “all politicians are alike” I tell them they don’t know about Sen. Barack Obama yet!

Please read the following and pass it around! This is the truth people, not stupid emails that make no sense to the middle-class person who believe everything they read or hear!

Remember when McCain and Bush were eating McCain's Birthday cake on the day Katrina happened?

Well, here's what Obama was doing:

* Sept. 2, 2005: Obama holds press conference urging Illinoisans to contribute to the Hurricane Katrina relief efforts.

* Sept. 5, 2005: Obama goes to Houston to visit evacuees with Presidents Clinton and Bush.

* Sept. 7, 2005: Obama introduces bill to create a national emergency family locator system

* Sept. 8, 2005: Obama introduces bill to create a National Emergency Volunteers Corps.

* Sept. 8, 2005: Obama co-sponsors the Katrina Emergency Relief Act of 2005 introduced by Senator Harry Reid
* Sept. 8, 2005: Obama co-sponsors the Hurricane Katrina Bankruptcy Relief and Community Protection Act of 2005 introduced by Senator Russ Feingold

* Sept. 12, 2005: Obama introduces legislation requiring states to create an emergency evacuation plan for society’s most vulnerable

* Sept. 15, 2005: Obama issues public response to President Bush’s speech about Gulf Coast rebuilding.

41. The situation warrants totally blowing off previous plans ...
... and making an effort to call attention to the situation -- especially since the flooding is largely being ignored in the media in favor of election coverage. Obama should call for better media coverage of what's going on, who needs help and what's being done to get aid to those needing it.

Making some speech about future economic policies will NOT be well-received in a state suffering from a natural disaster of this magnitude.

10. Hey - anybody who personally knows someone in IA affected
by the floods should mail them a CARE package with essentials. Obviously no one else is going to do squat.

I hope very soon there is some sort of website with info for how to personally help the communities in need. FEMA has failed. The entire federal government has failed to lift a finger to help. The state and local governments are obviously overwhelmed.

I wonder what kind of cake Bush is eating today?

I do not know anyone up there personally, but we have a few DUers up there. As far as anyone knows, they are safe and sound. The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier may have some up to date info. Unfortunately, I don't have a web address for them right now. I'll search and post it later. If any of you all are up that way, stay safe!
on edit- Ok I found a link to the Mason City newspaper. www.globegazette.com. They have pics of the flooding. Unfortunately, I have seen all too much of this crap in my lifetime. As I said, I live ina Mississippi River city which floods a lot, including this year. And it looks like it may be rising again.

Of course Bill Clinton was President then and FEMA had not been folded into the "Homeland Security" umbrella. I'm sure whereever bush* is, a two-bit country star and guitar aren't far behind.

Good luck: floods are terrible things IMHO and the clean-up lasts a long time. I hope you get the basic relief you need soon, from whatever source. Don't forget to boil your water - if you can!

Don't worry--the Bush administration hates FEMA as much as you do. That's why they will use FEMA's failures to fuel their own talking points about shrinking government, and "entitlements" like being rescued from a disaster.

Pumping out the water will increase pressure on outside and may make basement collapse, have been reports of this happening. Wild.

Edited on Mon Jun-09-08 03:23 PM by calipendence
Still remembering the tornadoes going through my old college town last year. I sure hope they don't get hard by floods now too!

I guess they are getting prepared for that very strong possibility now. And I guess downstream have a secondary inflatable dam to hold back the waters too from flowing too heavily once the overflow happens.

I drive over it almost daily on 380. It has been high all spring and recently dropped......then this past week I couldn't believe how fast it rose.....unbelievable.
In 93 we were told that was a once in 500 year flood.....would never happen in our lifetimes again.
People have been working tirelessly for anticipation of breaching the dam again...let's hope for the best.
