Tweety Just Called Me A "Low-Hanging Fruit"
Matthews says Obama's running mate should be "someone who's palpably patriotic," calls women voters "low-hanging fruit"

Summary: MSNBC's Chris Matthews said that Sen. Barack Obama should pick as his running mate "someone who's palpably patriotic, who sort of exudes it." Also, referring to Sen. John McCain's 6-percentage-point advantage over Obama among suburban white women in a recent poll, Matthews asserted, "women are low-hanging fruit, though, in the terms of politics. You can reach up and say, 'I'm pro-choice, he's not.' "

If he lived at my house -- what am I saying? I would have left his ass a long time ago.

13. US women voters head to Obama after Clinton departure: poll
De facto Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama has rapidly picked up support from women voters in the wake of Hillary Clinton's withdrawal from the campaign, according to a Gallup poll out on Wednesday.

Between the eve of the final primaries on June 3 and Monday, Obama's support among all women in polling matchups with Republican rival John McCain has jumped to give him a 13-point margin in this voter group.

According to Gallup, in its surveys covering June 5-9, Obama was supported by 51 percent of women voters compared to 38 percent for McCain.

A week earlier, Obama topped McCain with just a 48-43 percent spread.

Gallup pointed out that Obama's support among women voters is now close to the steady 52 percent level Clinton had in earlier theoretical matchups with McCain, whom she led in this group by 12 points.

14. Guess Tweety didn't read yesterday's NBC/WSJ poll. "White Women (46-39)"
That's Obama's lead with women. Among the other categories: Hispanics (62-28), Clinton Primary Voters (61-19), Blue-collar workers (47-42), Catholics (47-40), Independents (41-36), African Americans (83-7 percent), and Women (52-33).

15. Ok, there are so many things wrong with that statement...
...but let's pick just a couple.

1) Matthews acts as if Pro-Choice/Pro-Life is the ONLY issue for women. Granted, for some, it is a landmark for where that candidate falls on womens issues since enforced pregnancy is a pretty women-unfriendly notion.

2) suburban white women. don't you just LOVE the easily digestable demographic chunks? I understand the notion, in terms of marketing, where statistical clear majorities exist, exploit them for maximum impact. But this negates and ignores two things:
a) while people want to "fit in" and not be considered "fringe", they ALSO want to be considered as individuals. For those persons that are in a demographic, but don't fit the statistical norm in behavior and beliefs, society gives them a cheap choice, either suffer exclusion from consideration because you don't fit another pidgeon hole, or find another pidgeon hole that will accept you.
b) notably, at least for me, those "groupings" as defined by the media and right wing, far too often break down into lines that they then use to divide us. "Suburban white women" should view the "Rural white woman", the "suburban black woman" and the "suburban white female lesbian" as the "other". Its a feedback loop that's used to divide us into groups they can sell their shit to.

I object.

Low-hanging fruit. And what is the fruit that hangs lowest of them all?

Old white men bloviating on the teevee. You don't even have to pick them, they are so overripe they just fall off at the slightest change of wind.

16. He's such an ass on anything to do with women
Just a neanderthal.

OTOH, I think it's CRITICAL that we educate people about McCain's horrid record on women's issues - including choice. Too many who still think he's Mr. Moderate Maverick don't know that he has a 0% rating from PP on women's health issues, for instance.

Tweety's just got foot in mouth disease and a very, very outdated view of women that he needs to work harder to struggle against.

17. Oh, for God's sake
The term "low hanging fruit" simply refers to the more easily attainable parts of a larger group. All it means is that, as a group, suburban white women are more inclined to vote for Obama than other groups. Is that not true?

To make this whole thing even sillier, imagine if Matthews had said the opposite, that Obama can't win suburban white women. The same people getting in a huff about this would also be upset about that.

I'm really getting sick of the out-of-control phenomenon in this country where attention-starved people intentionally overreact to meaningless statements. In a culture where being outraged makes you empowered, this country is becoming one big competition to see who can make the biggest stretch to throw the biggest temper tantrum.

And considering the garbage the right wing is throwing at Obama, it makes perfect sense to pick a VP nominee who's hokily patriotic.

It's becoming all too apparent that too many people didn't get enough attention as children.

18. I don't understand. Is this supposed to be sexist or something?
"Low-hanging fruit" is just a metaphor for something that's easy to get with little effort. All Matthews is saying here is that women's votes will be a relatively easy get for Obama once McCain's positions on abortion and other issues become better-known. I understand Matthews is kind of an idiot, but there's nothing offensive here unless you're really trying hard to find it.

33. I don't think it's brainless to have standards
I'm pro-choice, so I'm not about to vote a pro-lifer into the White House if I have a better alternative. There's nothing idiotic about that. There are plenty of male single-issue voters anyhow. You may think Matthews analysis is inaccurate, but it seems like a stretch to call this sexism.

Tweety says some dumb things, but this isn't one of them. He's making the case that Obama can easily reach female voters who care about abortion and other key issues. For Obama, such voters are low hanging fruit, easily within his reach.
