2. In my experience, 99% of the people who use the term "schizophrenic" |
|
Really mean some kind of pop-psych bastardization of "dual personality."
Bad enough that they're using a mental illness as a slur; the least they could do is identify the relevant illness correctly.

9. You're so right. It has nothing to do with dual personalities. |
|
I'm bothered more by the lack of empathy for mental illness when they commit crimes. Mentally ill people are ignored until they commit a drastic plea for help. If life were fair & just, there would be more support for treating the illness before it leads to tragedy.

3. both my brothers are schizophrenic, so I'm wondering what the fuck you're talking about |

Because mental illness isn't stigmatic. It's common. And all too often undiagnosed, untreated and misunderstood.
I've never seen anyone on the "Left" use schizo as a derogatory slur.

6. Maybe not as an intentional slur... |
|
but the problem with all the unqualified keyboard-diagnosers labeling criminals as having various mental illnesses is that it promotes the idea that schizophrenics, bipolar people, etc., are dangerous and should be removed from society.

5. Every bastard who commits some terrible crime |
|
is suddenly "schizophrenic" according to a bunch of people on the internet with no qualifications to diagnose anyone.

8. I've really never seen that before.. |

...and I'm very sorry that you've encountered it. Clearly it has upset you...but as my mother always told me, "consider the source."
Those d-bags aren't worth getting too worked up about.

10. if you're hearing voices or seeing demons it isn't farfetched to think schizophrenic |
|
and I'm speaking as someone who listened to 2 family members who hear/see scary monsters in the perfectly ordinary when they're off their meds.

11. People toss around words like that without thinking. |
|
Don't let it bring you down. Consider the source.
