Finally, a wonderful, deserving choice to receive a Presidential Medal of Freedom
Edited on Thu Jun-19-08 05:32 PM by Husb2Sparkly
Dr. Ben Carson, a pediatric neurosurgeon, today was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

His story is well and widely known and is summed up well, if too briefly, on Wikipedia.

Beyond his incredible surgical skills, he is a true humanitarian and a wonderful, wonderful man. I can't think of anyone who could possibly deserve this medal more. I only wish it were someone other than that buffoon who had the honor to award it to him.

The news story -----> http://wjz.com/local/ben.carson.johns.2.750416.html

**Please** read this link ------> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benjamin_Carson

On edit ..... I have NEVER asked to have one of my posts kicked to the Greatest Page. I make an exception for this news. Please celebrate this great man.

2. That is an old photo....
I have followed this man's career for years after first reading about him. He is why I work so hard to steer the incorrigible kids around. That juvenile delinquent with a knife can be a skilled surgeon. That kid that learned to talk late and do poorly at mathematics might be another Einstein. This guy deserves the Medal....hell, I'll polish it for him.

Just sign me as a Nurse that knows a great Doc when she sees him.

3. You hit on one of the things that make him so remarkable ......
(And yeah .... its an old picture. He's much grayer now.)

He and his wife established a charitable foundation that gives $1,000 to kids who show academic exceptionalness. His goal is to have one 'Carson Scholar' in every school in the country.

In my view, his incredible skills as a surgeon are eclipsed by his concern for the young people of our country .... and the world.

4. Damn! He's HOT too! Even with a little gray, I bet he's a looker.
He sounds like a wonderful person. :)

A lot of surgeons are gifted with their hands, their people skills, not so much. He sounds like one of the
exceptions. Congrats to him. :toast:

5. How did he get picked for a PMF from this president?
Boy he's really scraping for that "legacy" thing isn't he?

Please don't take this to mean that I think that Dr. Carson isn't worth of this award. On the contrary, he exemplifies the kind of person who should be awarded a Presidential Medal of Freedom. It's just quite a change from this president's past history with PMFs. Finally a true humanitarian instead of a political toadie.

6. I certainly agree with the "bufoon" comment ...
I think Dr. Carson should be recalled to the WH next spring, so he can be re-awarded by an actual president.

7. He was featured on Bill Kurtis' "The New Explorers" ... dunno which episode ...
One *other* thing he is famous for is re-introducing (in a modern form) a procedure known as a "radical hemispherectomy", in which basically one half of the cerebrum (the outer, "thinking" portion of the brain) is surgically removed.

Something about his receiving the award from Bu**sh** reminded me of that. :)

8. Its funny you mention that .......
..... he just did one of those on an 8 year girl this past Monday. Obviously these things take a while to know for sure how they turn out, but the kid is already doing remarkably well. It is amazing to me that they can do this and the kid will recover and compensate for the missing brain part.

He is a very, very smart man.
