MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Two Boy Scouts who were injured when a deadly tornado tore through their camp in Iowa are recuperating after surgeries in Minnesota.

Thomas Auen, 14, of Sioux City, Iowa, and Rob Logsdon, 15, of nearby Lawton, Iowa, were in the same cabin when the twister struck June 11, killing four boys and injuring 42. On Thursday, they were on the same floor at Hennepin County Medical Center, recovering from similar surgeries.

Mary Auen with her son Thomas, who is recovering from hip bone surgery at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis. The Sioux City, Iowa, teen was injured in the June 11 tornado at the Little Sioux Scout Ranch.

Thomas was in the intensive care unit, unable to speak because of a breathing tube. But when his father, Larry Auen, asked if he had anything to say, the boy took a notepad and wrote: "Lord, together we can handle anything."

The teenagers came to Minneapolis this week for a procedure to repair their shattered hip bones, an operation in which orthopedic surgeon David Templeman specializes.

"The surgeries went well," said Templeman, who operated on both boys Tuesday.

Their parents are hoping for full recoveries, though neither boy will be able to walk for at least three months.

Thomas was one of the first victims airlifted from the Little Sioux Scout Ranch. He was sent to a hospital in Sioux City where his mother, a nurse, happened to be on duty. When Mercy Medical Center activated its disaster plan, word spread that it was for victims of a storm near Onawa, Iowa.

1. If we had nationalized health care, we wouldn't see these
constant fund raisers because families would not go bankrupt every time someone went into the hospital.
