MSNBC: " ...Roll of Race in Presidential Election" at bottom of TV screen
Edited on Sun Jun-22-08 08:53 AM by PCIntern
Rolling...rolling to the river?

I mean...REALLY.

Maybe they meant "...Roll of Space in Presidential Erection".

on edit: or: "...roll of dice in Presidential Election."

2. I imagine that's in response to a WaPo story today:
3 in 10 Americans Admit to Race Bias
Survey Shows Age, Too, May Affect Election Views

By Jon Cohen and Jennifer Agiesta
Washington Post Staff Writers
Sunday, June 22, 2008; Page A01

As Sen. Barack Obama opens his campaign as the first African American on a major party presidential ticket, nearly half of all Americans say race relations in the country are in bad shape and three in 10 acknowledge feelings of racial prejudice, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll.

Lingering racial bias affects the public's assessments of the Democrat from Illinois, but offsetting advantages and Sen. John McCain's age could be bigger factors in determining the next occupant of the White House.

Overall, 51 percent call the current state of race relations "excellent" or "good," about the same as said so five years ago. That is a relative thaw from more negative ratings in the 1990s, but the gap between whites and blacks on the issue is now the widest it has been in polls dating to early 1992.

More than six in 10 African Americans now rate race relations as "not so good" or "poor," while 53 percent of whites hold more positive views. Opinions are also divided along racial lines, though less so, on whether blacks face discrimination. There is more similarity on feelings of personal racial prejudice: Thirty percent of whites and 34 percent of blacks admit such sentiments.

3. you missed the point...
the point is that they used "roll", which is incorrect. It should be "role".

10. I see this sort of thing way too often.
There's really no excuse for this sort of sloppiness in the days of spell checkers. I think it's just another indicator of how dense people are anymore. These mistakes are allowed to happen because basically most people neither notice or care.

16. You've just hit upon a pressing issue
which has been haunting me for some months. I've noticed MANY posts from people who are usually quite careful with their language, misusing the word "anymore." It seems to be rather a new development and I'm curious how it came about.

Welcome to DU! :hi:

Edited on Sun Jun-22-08 12:55 PM by tblue37
I have an article you might enjoy reading. It is about the misuse of reflexive pronouns by people who feel they are somehow more elegant than simple objective case pronouns:
"Control Your 'Self': The Proper Use of Reflexive and Intensive Pronouns"

25. The next time I post
I shall have taken myself over to said website of erudition and myself will peruse the intended subjective source-matter. Me and Mine thank your profusely for thine informative factotums.

(All misuses are intentional, I only blame myself for errata)

27. Well, I should probably do the same, since I can't type at all, so
Edited on Sun Jun-22-08 01:39 PM by tblue37
my posts are always riddled with typos. Furthermore, since I am not young, my aging eyes don't proofread well on a computer, so even when I try to correct my errors, I still miss some.

When I have time, I copy-paste my comments into a Word document, so Word can help me spot some of the errors I miss--but of course it lets a lot of them get through. One of the ones I have had to learn to specifically proofread for is "ahs" for "has." Another is my tendency to type in the wrong "there"/"their," not because I don't know any better, but because for some reason I automatically type in the wrong one. I also always type "becuase," "of coruse," "peopel," "articel," “palce,” and other such transpositions.

But my Grammar and Usage for the Non-Expert site isn’t about such errors. It actually consists of targeted articles that help people deal with specific grammar and usage issues that often trouble even good writers, regardless of how well-educated they are.

For example, I explain why the proper form is “I feel bad” rather than “I feel badly,” or why the reflexive (“self”) pronouns should not be used where the objective case is called for. I also explain why American usage requires that the period or comma be placed inside quotation marks, whereas British usage follows logic to place the period or common either inside or outside the quotation marks, depending on whether or not the punctuation is part of the quotation.

I have an article explaining which titles should be italicized and which should be enclosed in quotation marks, one about when to use single quotation marks and double quotation marks, and one explaining when to capitalize words like “president,” “mom,” “aunt,” "attorney general,” etc.

It’s a practical site, and many people find it useful—especially since I also respond directly to emails from readers who have questions about matters I have not yet posted articles on. In fact, many of my articles were written in response to readers’ questions.

I have 95 articles up on that site, and I am always adding more. If you happen to have any grammar or usage question, just go to any of my articles, click the “Email me” button, and I will do my best to answer your question.

My purpose is always to help people. I am absolutely not a grammar Nazi, although one website, SAGP: The Self-Appointed Grammar Police! (http://sagp.miketaylor.org.uk/) was actually given its name in response to a comment I made in one article about how annoying the self-appointed grammar police can be. (The site even starts off by quoting that comment.)

28. The reflexive Fehler is so common
I don't even twitch at it anymore. I just started noticing the absence of a negative with the use of "anymore" recently.

18. Spell check would not catch "roll" for "role."
Spell check is an idiot savant. As long as a word is a word, it will wave it past the checkpoint.

I actually can't type, so my typing is riddled with typos. One of my most common errors, "ahs" for "has," is always accepted by spell check.

20. and do you notice that
words on the DU spellcheck are vetoed like Rethugs, Russert, and others...you would think that it would 'learn' or that administrators would program it for such common words...here at least.
