Can we please refrain from making "clot" jokes? |
|
Please remember that some DUers have had clots. It is bad enough that these unfortunate souls have been the victims of clots through no fault of their own. We don't need to compound their suffering by making insensitive, unfeeling, unliberal, unAmerican clot jokes. Clots aren't funny!

24. I've had two friends die of clots |
|
One was a man one month older than me, which was very sad. He died at 37 after a routine operation when a blood clot moved into his heart and caused his death. The other was in hospital for a long time, got out for a few days and died after passing out in Trader Joe's when a blood clot in his leg restricted blood flow and he later died in the hospital when the clot moved into his heart.
I fear blood clots after any operation, given how common they are.

51. The main problem is that you usually find out about them... |
|
..when you're dying from them. My 37 year old friend went home after his operation and died at home due to the blood clot. It shocked me at the time. He left behind a wife and two children, who were lucky to have the support of their church. If he'd been in hospital, there's a chance he could have been saved, but my other friend died in the hospital and they knew he had a blood clot. They gave him drugs to thin it out, but I think the thinning allowed it to loosen and move to his heart. He was 72 and had major surgery, so perhaps it was more complicated with his age and other illnesses. Both of these events opened my eyes to this problem. It's worth discussing with the surgeon if having an operation. There are steps that can be taken to minimize risk - drink plenty of fluids before and after the operation, for example.

76. I'm sorry to hear that. |

My dad nearly died at age 46 a few months after a successful (traditional) hernia surgery when he suffered a massive pulmonary embolism (blood clot in the lung - although in his case it was blocking all of one lung and half of the other). To this day we're not really sure how he survived, but I'm damn glad he did, and I feel for the families and friends of those who weren't so lucky. :( Clots scare the hell out of me - even now, seven years later, I still get a little shaky thinking about them, but for several years after the incident I couldn't even bring myself to talk about it. It's a horrible thing to watch - as long as I live, I don't think I'll ever be able to forget the way he lay there at the top of the stairs where he had collapsed, gasping for breath as his skin turned a horrible grayish-purple. :scared: I guess it may have been a blessing in disguise, though, because they did some testing once he was out of immediate danger and found out that part of the problem was caused by a genetic disorder called Factor V Leiden - a disorder that yours truly happens to have inherited. :( It's not generally tested for, because it's only present in about 8% of the population (I think) and most people never suffer any ill effects, but they decided to test me since a) my dad had nearly been killed because of it and b) I was a teenage female who could be seriously affected if I ever went on the birth control pill or got pregnant. So yeah, I can't ever go on the pill, and if I do decide to become pregnant later in life I'll have to be kept under close medical supervision (and probably inject myself with heparin or something) for the entire pregnancy. At least I know, though, so I can take the appropriate precautions (and that includes things like starting an aspirin regimen, making extra sure to get up and walk around on long plane flights, etc.).
Sorry to ramble, but this issue has affected me greatly (as you can probably tell). Peace!

I'm not a doctor or anything, but I understand laproscopic surgery is almost bloodless. I had my gall bladder removed using it and I'm fine. No bleeding at all. I suppose even laproscopic surgery could go wrong, but I understand the whole point of it is to make it quicker, easier and safer. If you have any concerns, you need to talk with your doctor.

Don't know where he went to school, but he did a good job on an appendectomy which he described to me as, " Not textbook". Mrs GoS has three small incisions which are healing nicely from a gangrenous appendix which was wrapped around her small intestine.
I didn't ask about video games though he did mention a fondness for xBox and cabernet sauvignon.

I just have garden variety diverticulitis and am being treated for my second bout of it. So they are suggesting the surgery. When done laparoscoptically it is a lot easier on the body than done open. So I am encouraged, particularly if it means I never have this kind of infection again (twice is enough for me!).

That's why I think it is because of a link with my mother's diverticulitis.
Obviously, I have this weakness in the wall of the sigmoid colon so I think it is in my best interest to have the surgery. Then, no more attacks!

6. Well, there's that "HIDE THREAD" feature that might be helpful |
|
I haven't seen any 'clot joke' threads, first of all. But I don't think that EVERY subject should be put on a "PC" pedastal in the event that some member of DU has an issue with it. And, FWIW, members of my family have suffered heart disease, strokes, and clots.
There isn't a joke in the world that some person won't take the wrong way.
If people want to get snarky about Big Dick's clot, it's fine with me. Life IS short. And that HIDE THREAD feature can save you angst if the subject troubles you.

To quote John Dean.
PRESIDENT NIXON: In other words, you, your judgment as to where it stands, and where we go now---
DEAN: I think, I think that, uh, there's no doubt about the seriousness of the problem we're, we've got. We have a cancer--within, close to the Presidency, that's growing. It's growing daily. It's compounding, it grows geometrically now because it compounds itself.
Guess he shouldn't have used the cancer analogy either I stick with my analogy on the clot..

especially painful things, since humor is a way to deal with what makes us uncomfortable
but around here, there is an "anti-" constituency for pretty much every subject, all of whom appear to me to have pretty much zero sense of humor.
you could talk about the old Roadrunner cartoon where a piano falls on Wile E Coyote and someone here will complain that a piano fell on the head of their Uncle Ernie and it's no laughing matter. And call you names for being such an insensitive sap.
If you find being buggered by a felon to be funny, I say let 'er rip with the jokes.

67. I completely missed it the first time |
|
And I had seen the other "Can we not make ___ jokes" threads!
leftofthedial, I believe, has earned a black belt in snarkitude. Because the BEST snark is the snark that sneaks up on you.

I didn't get called on phobe enabling (because I didn't enable any phobes)
What I got was called a homophobe.

and start getting beaten in the streets just for having clots, I will gladly join you in your fight.

69. A clot definitely isn't funny. |
|
What IS funny is quadruple bypass surgery, two angioplasties, implantation of a pacemaker, and two operations for aneurisms in both knees -- all taking place in order to sustain a guy who has no idea about the value of human life.
Well, it's not funny in a "ha-ha" way, but still.

70. While we are at it, let's lay off the gay jokes and the |
|
trans jokes and for the record, Ann Coulter is not a man, nor is she gay. She's straight. Admit it, she's on the straight team. We, and I think I can speak for many many of us in the GLBT community, do NOT want her. She's all yours. Do with her as you wish.

When people are discriminated against and made to fear for their lives for having clots I'll get back to you. Until then .
