PLEASE Please Give Us A Forum To Discuss Illegal Hiring And Illegal Immigration.
We need a forum to discuss ILLEGAL immigration. We could also use another forum to discuss legal immigration but that is not as much of an issue.

There are differing views on this from the Democratic Party. My own is very clear cut......illegal immigration hurts Americans while legal immigration helps America.

1. I think ALL immigration helps America
Human beings should not be refered as "illegals".

2. THe rules are clear- if you can find 9 other people who are donors
to say that they would also desire this forum, and then you PM one of the admins with the thread showing that you have support for such a forum, one will be created. Otherwise.... it just doesn't happen.

Good luck to you in your search for other folks wanting to discuss this issue

10. Do you support discussion?
Do you support open and candid discussion on issues that may be contentious? Do you support a big tent?

12. Me personally? Or are we talkin' about DU policy?
I love open and candid discussion. So does DU. If you want a specific forum for this topic, you're gonna have to go through the steps outlined above. However, if you want to discuss the issue in GD, or GDP, I'm sure there will be others who will join in on the conversation!

19. Thanks
Actually NCRainbow I hadn't noticed that you were a mod (btw were you a mod last night...lol?) and it was more or less a question addressed to the forum at large, and not you specifically, but thanks for the reply and comment.

There are many of my Democrat friends and some in local elected positions who don't buy into the Party leadership position supporting amnesty. They see it as nothing but a cave into big business just as Reagan did 20 years, a slap in the face to legal immigrants, and it won't and can't be enforced.

5. I don't really want to go there, on DU, personally.
I have less-than-PC views on the illegal immigration situation.

And yes, I am otherwise a fire-breathing liberal.

But I wish you luck.

7. My opinion on immigration is totally different, and I don't want to go there, either.

It would get so, so nasty so fast. Be a complete nightmare to moderate.

I mean, sure, go after building the forum if you think it'll do some good, but I will avoid that forum like the plague.

9. Or the repro choice forum or the religion forum...
Edited on Tue Mar-06-07 08:10 PM by BlueIris
two places I haven't set foot in for a very long time, because from what I've seen, they aren't just contentious, they are radioactive. And I've never been in I/P. Just a taste of what goes on in there from the spillover in GD is enough to keep me far, far away.

15. My thoughts exactly. Pure zealotry with no reasonable discussion
allowed--or at least paid attention to.

Let's keep it here where both sides weigh in and the zealots on both sides are carefully watched!

16. Count me in.
I am in the unenviable position of being both a legal immigrant and an immigration professional. I'm not all black or all white on immigration. There is a lot of grey. On one hand, I appreciate the contributions (cultural, economic, social) of people who enter the U.S. without visas or inspection at the border (a/k/a 'illegal' immigrants).

On the other hand, having had to wait nearly 14 years to get a green card, and then only getting it faster because I married a U.S. citizen, while in the meantime spending a great deal of money as a student without being able to work, I am not to keen in placing those who are in the U.S. illegally ahead of the line.

I also believe the policy of wet foot-dry foot for Cuban immigrants needs to be stopped. It is totally unfair and ridiculous.

Moreover, working as a professional in 'legal' immigration, I believe the L-1 visa program needs to undergo major modifications. Unlike the much maligned H-1B visas, L-1s do not have any wage requirements, no Department of Labor attestations and no need to provide benefits to the L workers, which is why a lot of corporations are establishing subsidiaries in places like India and then bring in Indian workers as intracompany transferees (which is what the L visa is for) without need to pay a prevailing wage. That, in my opinion, is a real shame. And, lest I forget, there is no annual congressionally-mandated number cap on L visas.

17. I agree with you 100%
We lived a similar situation. Dear hubby came to the US legally in 1993. He was on an H1B visa. Got in line. Waited, waited...paid his dues. Only after we were married in 1998 and got a lawyer did he finally get a green card. Total NIGHTMARE on Elm St. dealing with INS every couple months.

We have laws in this country, and some seem to be so eager to bend the rules and break them. It's not fair to so many people. But you'll get heckled on DU for saying this.

18. I seem to recall back in the Clinton days there was no problem
with immigration. In fact there was a labor shortage and firms were actively recruiting overseas to fill vacancies. So I think the real problem is the Bush administration needs a scapegoat for their failed economic policies. Therefore maybe we should put it in the economic forum.
