Jewish Dem ire boils over on Lieberman
Jewish Dem ire boils over on Lieberman
By Jared Allen and Manu Raju

Jewish Democrats are anxious that Sen. Joe Lieberman’s support for Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain (Ariz.) will hurt their own nominee’s chances with voters of their faith.

Their increasing frustration came to a head Wednesday when liberal activists and bloggers dropped off a petition calling for Democratic leaders to remove Lieberman, an Independent from Connecticut who caucuses with the Democrats, as chairman of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee in the next Congress. The petition contained 43,000 signatures.

But their frustration also has been building for months. And many of them have silently gritted their teeth while one of the most well-known Jewish members of Congress, who served as their vice presidential candidate in 2000, has sought to drive Jews even further from presumptive Democratic nominee Sen. Barack Obama (Ill.).

“Joe Lieberman, a friend of mine, just sees life differently,” Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.) said recently. “And so it’s too bad. We miss him.”

Lautenberg has been one of the most vocal Jewish lawmakers working to refute Lieberman’s claims that McCain, not Obama, offers the best path on dealing with Iran and securing the safety of Israel.

1. What a disappointingly misleading headline
I was hoping some Jewish Dems accosted Loserman on capitol hill and beat the snot out of him.

What a sight that would have been.

3. Interesting. His Jewishness doesn't enter into my assessment of Lieberman at all . . .
I just think he's a schmuck with poor ideals and even weaker ideas.

12. What bullshit.
He is Jewish and I imagine a Zionist as well. You obviously know nothing about modern Zionism.

13. Zionism just means supporting the existence of a Jewish homeland in the Middle East.
It doesn't mean supporting hawkish policies, the Likud, the Occupation, or everything the Israeli government does. Any more than being pro-American means being a Bush-loving Republican.

It certainly doesn't mean 'lying, covetousness and duplicity'.

8. I'm Jewish, and I couldn't give a damn what Lieberman thinks about anything.
I proudly signed that letter to remove Lieberman from committees.

For goodness sakes, there are bad white people, black people, jewish people, yellow people, green people.
Lieberman doesn't represent being Jewish in any way.

ridiculous supposition.

16. Most Jews Left Lieberman In '06
The only ones who still consider him a "leader" are those already in the bag for Likud and this regime. His biggest fans are the hate radio Jews (and I'm Jewish) like Michael Weiner, Dennis Prager, Michael Medved and their ilk...people a friend of mine recently called "Manchurian Jews".

Just like in the general population, you have about 20% of Jews who are dead-enders...right wing asshats who would love to see Israel extend from the Mesopotamia to the Meditarranean...consider Jordan really the Palestinian state and see the US as their protector and defender. This DOES NOT represent the majority of Jews in this country nor in Israel, but a loud minority.

They're further emboldened by money and the publicity given them by fundies like Hagee and the Armagedon set who see these Jews as their "meal ticket" to the big show. It's a slimy alliance between fundies of the two religions who use each other but whose ultimate goals are vastly different.

This is Lieberman's last big play...he's a man without a party as if he become a repugnican he loses all senority and he's burned too many bridges in this party. His best bet is a top cabinet post in Gramps administration...his only bet.
