Regarding the MSM: Then and Now
Edited on Thu Jul-10-08 08:52 AM by Stoic
25 years ago: I religiously watched "Washington Week In Review" and read two newspapers cover to cover daily. I watched the national and local news almost every night.

Today: I remember the day I stopped watching WWIR. It was when they were discussing the Dan Qualye comments about "Murphy Brown" as if they were meaningful and important. I rarely pick up a newspaper (although being so thin makes it easier). The local news is a joke and the "national" news is not far off.

So many of the "scandals" and "outrages" slip on by un-noticed by me and I'm a happier man for it.

(addendum) I should mention I get most of my news online, especially from non-US newpapers. Most commentary and analysis comes from mags like The Nation, etc. and, of course, my sweet, sweet blogs.

1. I agree, for the most part...
...but Washington Week is still the best news program on TV. ("in review" when the way of "Roebuck" years ago). Gwen Ifil is much better that Ken Bode', I feel the show has improved since she took over.

Newspapers have slowly sunk into total irrelevancy in my lifetime. Remember when they would actually investigate stories? Every time newspapers have budget issues they start firing the very people who could stop their slow suicide.

What do you
mean, irrelevant?

2. When news becomes about mass profit and entertainment, can you any different trend?
And who would buck the trend, when only so many corporations own all the outlets?

3. I stopped watchin WWIR when they let the author of Bloodsport on the Clintons...
get a long monologue without questions.

I used to read two dailies, several weeklies, and was a faithful view of local and nightly TV news.

Now I trust them not at all - only for distraction and coporate omission or spin.

I read no papers, and watch the local TV news only for the weather. I just don't trut corporate media anymore, for they have stopped telling the truth and serving the people of the USA.
