Edited on Wed Jul-16-08 05:51 AM by autorank
239 Representatives voted for "The Kucinich Resolution" to refer his impeachment article to committee for *televised hearings*. All 229 Democrats present voted YEA but, guess what, there were 9 Republicans voting with the MOST Honorable Cong. Dennis Kucinich (D-OH).

That's a very conservative part of Maryland, btw. Pretty interesting.

16. Makes sense to me.
This administration is hardly conservative. True conservatives should be voting to impeach.

20. Indeed it is a very conservative area.
I live in the 2nd district, which is a fraction less conservative, but still we can't seem to get rid of Boscoe Fartlett, I mean Roscoe Bartlett, the politician who's done it all.

2. ok = so perhaps I am paranoid
I trust no repub when they vote with our side. What is their motivation.

Does the GOP want this to go to a hearing? If Pelosi and Reid are correct about avoiding impeachment - that it is against the will of the American voter - then will this hearing work to our disadvantage?

I certainly hope the Dems have thought this through. But . . . the Dems thinking anything through is a concept hard to grasp

Jones (NC) turned on Bush when he figured out the war was a big lie. He was the inventor of "Freedom Fries" in the House cafeteria.

Manzullo is in an affluent, educated district as is Reichert (WA) Those started turning away from Bush in 2004 and went full tilt in 2006. He wants to survive.

Murphy (PA) and Gilchrest (MD are in the same neck of the woods, and it's getting ugly out there, real depression like conditions.

Shays (CT) is in an outright wealthy district but he's very worried because people are tired of his two faced nonsense.

Brady and Turner, I don't know. Turner's center of population is Dayton which was one of the really lousy voting areas in Ohio 2004, just horrible. That's quite a switch.

And of course, Paul can't stand Bush.

So they each have their story but we'll take their votes and they do deserve a tee shirt;)

39. wrong about manzullo. his district is very rural.
there are a few tourist spots, a few bunches of artists, but otherwise, it is farms. very, very red. i know some folks out there, and it is very conservative. either don has some sort of axe to grind, or the few pinkos running around out there are getting to him. one got himself elected alderman out there, and has caused a stir. i would be ecstatic to think they had anything to do with it.
come to think of it, i think i will drop a couple of emails.

10. Jones is the Rep for my district.
Edited on Wed Jul-16-08 06:45 AM by Island Blue
Even though he's very socially conservative and wrong about a lot of things, he detests the war in Iraq and I give him mad props for that. This is actually a bold move for a Representative who has so many military bases in his district. Unlike most Republicans, Jones has not been afraid to attend military funerals and has seen the devastating impact this war has had on families.

Also, don't forget that Jones was once a Democrat (albeit a very conservative one) and his daddy was a very popular (less conservative) Democrat who served this district for a long time.

Edited to say: I'll call or e-mail his office today to thank him for this. :patriot:

27. This gives me hope
As in hope that we can deal with people on the full spectrum of political beliefs if they're honest.

Now, the good news, and we all know this, is that when I talk to Republicans over the last months,
I find that they're reflexively anti Bush (that was a year or more ago) and now, they get really
pissed off and say things like "He belongs in jail!" in an angry tone.

I have a feeling that Bush's popularity has been overstated by the corporate polls and that he's really
around 18 (captured in a recent ARG poll on the economy). I beat this one to death, but two years ago
I was in Zell Miller country, North Georgia, and a whole bunch of historic Republicans there were
furious with Bush, sincerely and vocally so. These were guys who just would have been that way unless
there was a huge anti Bush sentiment.

23. Ron Paul and Walter Jones make sense
They're part of the "out of Iraq" caucus. I would guess the guy from CT is a moderate Republican. There are a few of them. I wouldn't vote for one, but they're not the true evil.

Don't know about the others.

32. It's about intellectual honesty for them.

Jones found lying unacceptable and Paul has a well thought out rationale for not invading other
countries. I admire them both for their stand. Gives me hope for reconciliation and action
together as a nation. These two looked through the lies and inconsistencies. Others will soon.

9. I sent a Reporter this quotation from an Ohio Rep to ask why he didn't stand by
his words:

Seven Republican Members of House Judiciary Call for Impeachment out of Duty to the Constitution

by Cheryl Biren-Wright Page 1 of 3 page(s)

-snip

Hon. Steve Chabot (OH) Phone (202) 225-2216 . (202) 225-3012
Thank you. Mr. Chairman, every member of our committee recognizes that this is likely the most important vote we will ever cast, and all of us would prefer that the president's actions had not led us down this fateful path. However, we have sworn an oath to uphold the Constitution and we must fully accept that responsibility.

Back in 1974, Congresswoman Elizabeth Holtzman, who served on the judiciary committee during Watergate, said that she would vote to impeach President Nixon, in part, because -- and I quote -- "the presidential cover-up is continuing even through today."

The historic record, the law, and the Constitution tell us that the charges against the president do indeed rise to the level of impeachable offenses. They constitute serious violations of criminal law and fall squarely within our Founding Fathers' definition of "high crimes and misdemeanors."

Mr. Chairman, impeaching the president is an extremely serious matter. Throughout these proceedings, I've tried to keep an open mind, giving the president every opportunity to refute the facts that have been laid before our committee, but now all of the evidence is in and a decision is at hand.

It has become apparent to me that impeachment is the only remedy that adequately addresses this president's illegal and unethical acts. Allowing the president's actions to go unpunished would gravely damage the Office of the President, our judicial system and our country.

The statements above are excerpts from transcripts of the House Judiciary Committee's impeachment hearings. December 10-11, 1998. Each congressman is a current member of the House Judiciary Committee.

12. Only Two Real True Believers In That List
Ron Paul and Walter "Freedom Fries" Jones. My bets are Jones would vote out articles right now...not sure if Paul would. The others are covering their asses. THe one I can't figure out is Manzullo...this guy barely has a pulse and is generally a reliable GOOP rubber stamp. His district is still one of the redder ones in the state and he's not really in any trouble, but then maybe he sees the writing on the wall. To the east Bill Foster just took that seat, to the west is Phil Hare...and the Illinois GOOP delegation could be down to a precious handfull this fall.

The GOOP is a total joke in this state now...they can't even mount a credible statewide candidate anymore and having the next potential President residing in the state sure isn't gonna help at the polls this fall.

The lock-stepping ducks in a row are wanting to put some distance between themselves and the kkkalamity kkkid. Even the ugliest of the ducklings have had a bill full of the bullsh*tter in chief. The robber duckies want to Goose-step to a new-step all of a sudden, here at sElection time. I look for more of the defective duckies to defect from the party line, in time to try and feather their stinky nests.

doggie "treats" we have been getting all those great "roll back" deals on.

The job exporting CEOs don't need no stinkin' "Quality Control!"(the robber retailers have "rolled back" the quality and the quantity just about everywhere lately, thanks to 8 years of unbridled and under-regulated, dog eat lead Pubbie-nomics)

Cheney's Little Buddy has steered the once great ship of state all the way up to the head of sh*t creek and then sold the paddle to the highest bidder in some gawd forsaken "Islam-o-fascist" land. The rats are starting to jump ship, but there's nowhere left to swim in this toxic, oil based, economic cesspool, that Karl, George and Dick have created.

Forgiveness is what REALLY should be "OFF THE TABLE" in congress.

35. not necessarily. Just 9 (used to be 24) who figured this was a safe vote
A month ago 24 repubs voted with the Democrats to refer DK's resolution to Judiciary. Why is everyone so happy that only 9 voted that way this time?

Actually, it doesn't matter if its 9 or 24 or whatever. Yesterday's vote to refer was, like the votes to refer DK's Nov 2007 resolution against Cheney or his June resolution against Chimpy, just a way to get rid of the resolution.

I suspect that of that nine (and of the 24 in June) two or three might actually vote to start an actual impeachment inquiry, if that was on the table (maybe Paul, maybe Jones). But that's about it. The rest are just looking for an easy, meaningless vote.
