Al Gore challenges nation to produce all electricity with clean fuels within 10 years

Just as John F. Kennedy set his sights on the moon, Al Gore is challenging the nation to produce every kilowatt of electricity through wind, sun and other Earth-friendly energy sources within 10 years, an audacious goal he hopes the next president will embrace.

The Nobel Prize-winning former vice president said fellow Democrat Barack Obama and Republican rival John McCain are "way ahead" of most politicians in the fight against global climate change.

Rising fuel costs, climate change and the national security threats posed by U.S. dependence on foreign oil are conspiring to create "a new political environment" that Gore said will sustain bold and expensive steps to wean the nation off fossil fuels.

"I have never seen an opportunity for the country like the one that's emerging now," Gore told The Associated Press in an interview previewing a speech on global warming he was to deliver Thursday in Washington.

1. It is better to aim high and succeed, than
to aim low and fail.

Thank you President-Elect Gore!

2. Gore sensibly omits McCains plan for 45 new nuke plants
To meet his 10-year goal, Gore said nuclear energy output would continue at current levels while the nation dramatically increases its use of solar, wind, geothermal and so-called clean coal energy. Huge investments must also be made in technologies that reduce energy waste and link existing grids, he said.

3. Al Gore should've fought harder to keep industry here.
Edited on Thu Jul-17-08 08:09 AM by Romulox
His shilling for "free trade" has sent too much of the know-how and capital offshore to ever accomplish anything like this. Plus, "free trade" and MFN for China means whatever reductions in emissions we achieve will just be replaced by emissions from China, as more and more industries are boxed up and shipped overseas. China will then sell back to us the things we used to make here, but without being hampered by any environmental regulations whatsoever--a net increase in emissions and energy use.

4. and I bet HIS "green venture capital company" will lead the way
instead of working at it while he was in office, he's set his focus on getting things done when and where he can take monetary advantage of it.
I dont fault the guy for his desire to have "green energy", but didnt Jimmy Carter also have a plan back in the 70's? Hell, Carter even had solar collectors on the roof of the White House before Reagan ripped them off. Did Gore put them back up when he was there????
