Starbucks location Closure List here:
My town was spared; surprising because we're about a mile square w/3 and a 1/2 (inside Barnes & Nobles bookstore.)

14. I couldn't care less, really.
You're as bad as the religious right-wing retards who call for boycotts of businesses every time they offer benefits to same-sex partners or do anything else that offends them. Some of us don't really give a fuck and just want to go to a coffee shop for, y'know, coffee.

near me at Jax Beach there are two locales across the street from each other. I could walk out the front door of the first one and throw a football and hit the other one. Excessive- yes.

12. They just built this one.
11955 STOCKTON & MACK 7800 STOCKTON BLVD SACRAMENTO CA

Seriously, it only opened last winter, it's maybe 9 mos old.

It's kind of a stupid location though, on a very busy intersection in a cramped parking lot that's hard to get to. There's another maybe 1/2 mile away at Bruceville and Cosumnes, but it's on the other side of the freeway and does not have a drive through.

It looks like the one inside the grocery store a parking lot away is staying open. The fact that they had two in the same plaza always annoyed the hell out of me.

15. Ours are saved, but I prefer the small locally owned ones.
Cuppy's is apparently a small chain, but the owner of ours is freakin' awesome, and their stuff's far, far better than Starbucks.

18. And yet NOT the one in Ocean Beach, San Diego, which residents had fought against so long
You'd think that would be one of the first on the chopping block since it was so unpopular even before it opened.

19. Out of curiosity what was the residents' qualms with having a Starbucks?
I understand people trying to prevent Wal-Mart from moving into their area because local businesses are simply unable to compete with the prices. But Starbucks ain't exactly cheaper than the local coffee shop and it's either better coffee or it isn't. Personally I think Starbucks is great if you want a milkshake that has some coffee taste in it, but there are plenty of better places to get coffee. So I don't really mind having one around although I don't go there too often.

23. Ocean Beach is an area of San Diego which is
kind of an alternative, organic, progressive "hippy" area, anti-corporate, anti-chains, pro-locally owned, home of the O.B. People's Food Co-op, the largest head shop in San Diego, and stores where people are at this moment buying Doors and Hendrix albums. It has a laid-back atmosphere and easy access to drugs. It's the part of town the Rolling Stones used to go to to buy their drugs when on a tour stop here. It's where you will see more peace signs and tie-dye shirts per capita than any other part of San Diego, and oddly is a tourist attraction partly because of it, sort of like a Haight-Ashbury right next to the ocean. I got the following text from newrules.org:

May. 1, 2001

STARBUCKS NOT WELCOME IN OCEAN BEACH

More than 300 residents turned out for a Town Council meeting last month in Ocean Beach, California to voice their opposition to Starbucks. The chain plans to open a store on Newport Avenue, one of the main drags running through this town of 15,000 just north of San Diego.

"There has never been a chain store on this street," noted Dawna Perkins, a member of the Town Planning Board. Ocean Beach is home to numerous locally owned businesses, including eleven coffee shops. Residents have successfully fought chain stores since the late 1970s, when petitions and rallies led a chain donut shop to drop its plans for an Ocean Beach location. Last year, local opposition forced Exxon to abandoned plans for a gas station. To date, only three chains have opened in the community.

Keeping Starbucks out is proving especially difficult, however. The company is willing to pay almost double the going rate to lease the property, which opponents say will drive up nearby rents and force local businesses to close. "Very soon, we will be like other communities with chain stores up and down the street. That will be the beginning of the end of Ocean Beach," contends resident Kip Krueger.

The Town Planning Board opposes the project, but may have no legal recourse to stop the chain. The site is zoned commercial and Starbucks requires no special permits to locate there. On a unanimous vote, the Board sent a letter of opposition to the company and property managers. Members of the Board are currently reviewing options for limiting future chain store expansion, including a restriction on formula businesses.

Meanwhile, residents are keeping up their protest of Starbucks with phone calls and plans for a boycott. A rally in March drew several hundred."

33. "Oh, what shall I do without my latté?"
This is just the beginning...

With gas and food costs rising the "extras" in life will slowly fade into oblivion. Go read the latest on new car sales...down 25%. I fully expect to see restaurants start closing at a higher rate than normal. People just don't have money for stuff like that anymore.

Of course, at about 5 bucks a frapuccino, instead of closing stores they could just cut their prices to something reasonable and take a little less profit on the $.29 cup of coffee they are charging $5 for......nah....that'll never happen.

34. Well...
go to Starbucks' site and check out their incredible emplyee benefits, which include health & dental insurance for PT workers (20 hrs/week)... the CEO supports progressive policies and treats emplyees how we'd like all large corporations to. The inevitable downside is the prices they need to charge to allow that... I don't think we can have it both ways.

Starbucks is out of my budget (though i buy their grounds to make at home).

35. Ah. The 4 in the whole state of Vermont are still safe.
None near me, but let's just celebrate that Vermont retains a smidgen of civilization, as others know it.

I mean, however would we be full liberals without our lattes?
We've got the Birkenstocks down pretty much.
We've definitely got the Volvos (although I must say the state car is the Subaru).
We hike and hug trees on a regular basis (sometimes twice a day).
We listen to VPR and many of us don't even get cable, so we aren't tainted by Faux News.
We've got granola and honey and lots of organic farmin'...
More cows than registered voters...
(the only state with NO McDonalds in the capital city)...

and of course... we've got... BERNIE SANDERS!!!

Oh, and don't forget.... PATRICK LEAHY!

So, I guess, for the moment... this bastion of Liberals... is SAFE!

Whew!
